Yeah, the deposits seem to form on the timing cover in the absence of constant oil flow, probably just what's being splashed off the timing chain. Doesn't bother me all that much as it is certainly not going to be flushed away into the pan (of course, I'd rather it wasn't there, but since it is...). The fact that all the rotating pieces are basically unworn, and there is no evidence of sludge in the deep corners is more important to me. Sooner or later I'll pull the pan, but extensive probing with a looped coat hanger showed absolutely no sludge. The PCV system is all-new since I got my hands on the car, and it got a new turbo this January. Certainly not as bad as some of the sludge monsters I've seen pics of.
