PEAK jumpstarters are junk

85p, 88p, 77p whatever you want.

After wearing out the two "air compressors" in two different jump starters in as many years, I bought a Viair 88P. Three and a half years later and I'm still using it for everything, lawn tractors, bikes, cars, and trucks.

I still use one of the cheap jump starters, with the "air compressor" (ha) removed and a fresh Japanese made AGM battery in it every 3 years. They are not necessarily the same as Fire Alarm batteries, those are often the cheaper Gel Cell and have a much lower charge and discharge Amp limit. I use it to jump people's cars who are neglectful and unprepared. If it doesn't start I say "oh well" and tell them to call AAA or get a ride.

If I sound callous, it's because I jump started a guy several years back, it was quite the experience. First I carefully explained to him the fire hazard, wait until I'm done then ground to chassis, charge his vehicle first for 5 minutes while I rev my engine, and then disconnect before starting. He nodded and said OK and while I put my end on my battery he jammed his ends (of my jumpers) on his battery and hit the starter the moment my arcing clips hit my battery. Fortunately my voltage regulator didn't die right then and there, but it did go up shortly thereafter.

No more jump starts from my vehicle battery, unless you're my wife, and I control the whole process.

I went through many 12vDC air compressors up until about 2007, when I bought a masterflow mf-1050.

At that time Viair were still made in USA and still $$$.

With some spit and polish, more recently I improved the Mf1050, retapping the head for 1/4 NPT fittings, better airhose and locking tire chuck, and improved heat removal from head, and improving the copper from battery clamp to relay in the endcap.

The cheap compressors are OK to put 5PSi in a tire here or there, or perhaps once refill a fully depleted tire, but their duty cycle must be observed or they overheat, rupture the piston seal, and turn into noisy Tire deflators.

I'd highly recommend against any jumper pack with bells and whistles as the bells and whistles are as cheap as bells and whistles can be engineered and manufactured, and will Fail to work properly once Murphy has determined the worst possible time for failure to occur.
---

I've also had the nightmare jumper cable patron which forever put me off ever hooking my vehicle electrically to another vehicle unless I am in total control of the whole process.

The short version of the story is, the person parked next to me left their lights on, asked for help. I had two sets of clamps with 12vSAE connectors and 12 and 10 AWG leads, from my air compressor and an 250 watt inverter, with a 10 awg 10' long small extension cord. So about 12 feet of 10 AWG through 2 SAE 12v connectors as improvised jumper cables. Inadequate in the extreme for instant jumping, but With a few minutes passing 30 amps or so before cranking engine, would work OK.

If the engine was cranked before an adequate period of time, these SAE connectors would melt, and while I explained this rather extreme limitation, and asked for a few minutes to pass while my system charged his battery some, the guy instantly jumped in his vehicle and I instantly pulled the connector apart before he turned his key got only a click, then he cursed at me when I told him I disconnected the cable as it would have melted my 12v SAE connector and adjacent wiring and I was not going to sacrifice it just for him.

Cursed me again, I cursed back, things could have gotten ugly. I removed my clamps from his battery and drove away. That was many years ago, I still sometimes see the same guy, and he always gives me the finger.

Having had a few cheapo electric pumps, these days I use a manual bicycle pump for topping up tyres. It takes a while but its reliable. Sometime I may get around to making something better.

The Peak jumpstarters work great for jumpstarting..... it's the charge port that is the main problem. It flips open & closed & eventually breaks. Such a terrible design, that I think the engineer should be fired. OTHER jumpstarters feature a hardened 120 volt plug that cannot break.

I cannot see your pic.

Wow. Did he explain why he acted so stupidly? That's just rude for him to ignore your "wait 5 minutes" advice.

Get the CAT from Costco. Lifetime warranty. 18ah sla are fine for jump starting. They just need to be maintained like any battery. Kept charged and charged ASAP after use. I have had them last years.

Just smiled, said "thanks" and drove away, leaving me seething and coiling up my 20' 4ga jumpers. He's lucky his battery wasn't so dead it didn't stall immediately, or maybe his vehicle had a self-exciting alternator.

But the thread is about jumpstarters.
Because he uses a jump starter to pump up tires. He even said:

So since the jump start part still works, he can still use it. Since he needs an air pump, I recommend using a dedicated pump, specifically the Ryobi I put a link to.

AKA DURALAST at Autozone. It appears identical to my Peak starters but with the sticker changed to Duralast

I wonder who's making this junk?

Because my car was dead, Pep Boys was the only store in walking distance, and I bought what they had. (Also it's now clear the jumpstarters are made by some 3rd party, not Peak or Duralast.)
