I don't understand the continued passion for Nissan vehicles.

July Auto Sales

The Altima is a good mid-size but is needing a redesign. The Sentra is way behind the times, the Titan, Pathfinder and Xterra are all on dated designs. The Frontier is a solid piece but, as with the rest of the lineup, is in need of a refresh. The Juke is the newest entry, and by far the ugliest. The Rogue is a decent small SUV, but nothing stellar for the segment. The Versa is cheap...what else can you say. Discounts only go so far.....what is the draw to Nissan vehicles?

Not difficult to understand...what you see as "dated," most folks see as "proven."

The question is what have the incentives been during this time period? Around here there's been 0% financing on many Nissans including Altima for quite some time. In this economy, 0% financing goes a long way toward selling vehicles. Wouldn't doubt that some have also had cash back added to the 0% financing.

Perhaps less love for the vehicles than the incentives that go with them.

I'd bet it's mostly incentives, and I think the current gen Altima looks quite good when stacked up against many of its competitors. Most of the Nissan designs still look fairly good.

Hasn't Nissan said they plan to put out new models fairly quickly for the next several years?

I am drawn to Nissan vehicles. I particularly like the Altima, Maxima, Murano and 370Z. What draws me to them is the driving experience per dollar. I like cars to be fun and have personality, but be reliable. I like good power delivery and good handling over ride quality. I like the option of manual transmissions. I also like the VQ engine which is what I would get in each of the above vehicles. Unfortunately I am not a fan of CVT's which to me detracts from what is otherwise a sportier option than the other MFG's offerings.

Just like others are drawn to Honda or Buick, every manufacturer has its followers. Otherwise they would not be in business, generally speaking.

Proven cars -for the most part.

Some models are a little spotty in reliability. There 6 cylinder engine is considered one of the best ever made.

Here is my question:
Why all the love for Hyundai all of the sudden?

-They put out PURE JUNK for 20 years -then slapped a 10 year warranty on their junk until enough people bought into it. Now they have money and *boom* nice cars...

When Hyundai started to design and produce their own engines, we started to see an improvement. The Hyundai Alpha was better than it's Mitsubishi derived 4G15 predecessor. Likewise, the Lambda is an improvement over it's Mitsubishi derived 6G7X predecessor.

Maybe you can't be significantly better than Mitsubishi until you stop using Mitsubishi motors.

Hyundai should also be commended for what they've done with Kia. 15 years ago, Kia took a solid Mazda design (Protegé) and completely ruined it. I mean seriously. Have you driven a manual transmission early Sephia? Vague would be a compliment for the shifter. Coil springs were sourced from click type ball point pens. Damping....yeah there might be some from the friction the struts make. Steering? If you turn the wheel enough it will kinda' go that direction.

Now I see 100,000+ mile Spectras that are still running well.

They are practically giving away the Altima's, you can lease them for well under $200 a month.

Problem is than you are stuck driving a Nissan.

The Altima owners I've talked to are quite pleased with them so it doesn't seem that bad to be "stuck" with one. Especially if it has a VQ in it

I remember words of one of the Porsche engineers about 911. "It's hard to change a perfect car". I do like Nissans, and how they look, most of all japanese cars here. Hope 350z will be my next toy.

Yeah, guys don't forget about legendary silvias, skylines and new GT-R. Not every car for 70-85k grand can compete with 200K+ 911 Posrches...

I'll probably buy another Pathfinder or three in my lifetime after the wheels fall off of mine. Then again, this is my first car, and my family's had great longevity and enjoyment with all but one out of five Nissan vehicles in the past 16 years or so, so maybe I have a bit of bias. I do not like the styling of current incarnation of the Pathfinder, but every other model isn't awful IMO.

I must say, I'm really happy with our 2010 Altima V6. Yes, I've complained about it a little, but for the 21.5k we paid for it, the car is an incredible value. Strong engine, fantastic suspension for a family sedan, reasonable fuel economy, low maintenance costs (so far), reasonably priced extended warranty, etc. The build quality and materials of the car are also miles ahead of my 2011 Prius and the Altima is simply a much more engaging and pleasant car to drive. Considering that many C-segment cars have gone upmarket, I feel the 21.5k we paid for our Altima was an absolute steal.

I liked Nissans in the mid-90s. I don't care much for some of the stuff they have out today. But in the mid-90s, I really liked their clean and conservative styling. My wife's first car was a 200SX, which her brother drive for a while, then they eventually sold. I bought a 1995 4x4 Truck in 2001 with 174,000 miles on it, and it ran like a clock. That may be one of my favorite vehicles that I've personally owned (but I've really enjoyed all of my vehicles). The driving position, the ergonomics, the gauge cluster. It was all very simple and very well laid-out.

Nissan got "edgy" in the past decade and has largely lost my interest, but that's subjective; I know they continue to make generally outstanding vehicles. It is impressive that they continue on the sales streak that they started earlier this year. I hope their success continues.
