This happens most every year in southern California. It's why they call it a, "Fire Season". The only question is how bad will it get. This time it would appear that it couldn't have gotten any worse.

All the holes in the Swiss Cheese managed to line up perfectly this time. People will rebuild, and the same thing will happen again. It's only a matter of time. People are complaining across the country, just how much their homeowners insurance has gone up in the last couple of years. Many to the point of unaffordability. This is only going to make matters even worse.... Much worse.

There was a guy, (a citizen), being interviewed last night, who said that he has had 4 homes burn to the ground in the last 22 years in L.A. county...... He said he intends to rebuild yet again.

I'm sorry, but how much sympathy can you have for someone who willingly puts up with that? And A LOT of what's happening is man made. Who builds a water system that allows fire hydrants to go dry, when they're needed the most?

Who sacrifices bringing in more water to service their ever increasing demand, in order to save a stupid fish? Who knocks down 4 dams to increase the water environment, so the indians will have more Salmon?

Who refuses to clear highly flammable undergrowth along the right of way of said power lines, to help prevent this from happening? Along with electrical brownouts from having it short out power lines in high winds?.... Which California gets every year, to the point that they have named them? (The "Santa Ana Winds").

California does. All the way down the list. Top to bottom. And you can forget the whole ruse and politics of, "Climate Change". And remember the same people who are now losing their lives, homes, cars, pets, along with everything else they own and cherish, are all the same ones who keep putting the people in charge, who set up this whole apocalyptic, burning house of cards...... And who continue to keep them there.

The one thing that will change is either higher homeowners insurance and/or fewer companies will to write policies.

Before areas become unhabitable they become uninsurable.

The people with billions who can afford to rebuild and not insure will rebuild.

Maybe they will offer homeowner liability insurance without dwelling coverage.

Paint it as you wish but not relevant when your firefighters say they do not have the water to fight the fire. Mayor of LA not even present to be working on the matter.
you are missing my point on the statement, but agreed, fire need water, without that you are kind of up a creek....we are in agreement

Oh all those high end big mansions and retail, all the movie stars homes.....needs federal assistance on the double.........but those folks in western NC...........nah they will be alright.

When it comes to water, listen, I think the will be all ears how to engineer water supply upstream where there is no absolutely any drop of water.
As many things in the US, infrastructure is old, and the question is: how much of supply is enough for that many hydrants being used? Are you sure your community would fare any better?
They ran out of water after 15hrs of constant draw by fire fighters. That area is not connected to main water supply in LA.

Can you give us details what exactly people in NC didn’t get and what people in CA did?
Don’t forget STATES RUN THE SHOW!
i worked on some projects post Black Forest fire here, and federal aid was sitting bcs. local Sheriff had his ego hurt during fire.
Katrina is also good example how local authorities screw up. Though federal authorities did mess up there (and Louisiana still didn’t get their act together).

Brother in OC has not smelled smoke, prevailing northerly dry Santa Ana winds keeping smoke away - and I am not wrtiting this to be trite - but rather with those millions and millions of people, many have existing lung problems. Sensitive people start having issues before the smell of smoke comes in. The whole thing sucks. No such thing as rural living in that area.

Mayor of LA had foreign trip. What she supposed to do? Teleport herself immediately on Wednesday? She was back yesterday.
And again, I bet they will be all ears how about reengineering water supply in the area where there is no drop of water.
Infrastructure in that area is not planned for such a draw of water for 15hrs by numerous engines. Are you sure your community can handle that? Are you sure your community is properly built to have thousands of people evacuated in matter of few hrs? If this happened anywhere else but CA, I can tell you that things would be much worse.

My community, like most in this country, does not have to deal with raging wildfires most every single year. That destroy millions, (or in this case, billions of dollars of property).

In the 5 homes I've owned in my lifetime, in 2 different states, there has never been a case that I have heard of, or read about, where hydrants have run dry, due to a lack of a proper water infrastructure...... That in this case, has existed for decades.

These fires are the kind of thing that have become old news in California. It happens every year. As I said, the only question is how bad. California has refused to provide, or increase the proper water infrastructure they require... Again for decades.

Only now will they possibly address it. And the problem now is they no longer have the money to. Remember, it wasn't that long ago this state had a huge surplus of money. Now that surplus has not only been wasted in some of the most stupid ways possible, but they've managed to replace it with TENS OF BILLIONS in debt.

I'm not going to get into the politics of all of it. So let's just say California is now in the process of reaping what they have sown. And it's one hell of a lousy crop.

Like any disaster - there will be many findings and ways to mitigate going forward. One member already mentioned non flammable roof types which can be stronger as well ...
BiL recently burned their garage down - happened quickly bcs of pine needles piled up on the roof (embers from burning some brush) ...

If the wind keeps blowing 60 mph, no amount of water is going to put it out. Most wildfires are only put out after weather conditions change to less favorable to fire.

There are trade-offs in the design of everything. A larger fire department means more people and equipment for taxpayers to pay for every day even when there is no fire. Building a more robust water works makes water more expensive every day. Improving power lines so they're less likely to spark a fire makes electricity more expensive every day.

Huge chunks of the world's populations exist in diseased squalor...How big are the world's "refugee reservoirs"?
I recall tile roof and fire brick details being mentioned in TV shows, not just in 'news reports' back in the '60's.
Here we've mentioned decades old deficiencies in planning and lengthening wait times for tanker aircraft deliveries.

We don't provide for plastics recycling or isolation; a blind eye is turned to real costs.

A big picture outlook is something we don't have.

Mayor of LA had foreign trip..........

In this case, that was most likely a good thing. She sure isn't much good when she's here. Remember, this is the same, "community leader", who, along with the D.E.I. hired LGBTQ Fire Chief of L.A., slashed $17.6 MILLION DOLLARS from the Fire Department budget, to spend on the homeless..... Another massive problem they allowed to develop into yet an even bigger economic catastrophe.

I swear to God, you couldn't make this kind of idiotic nonsense up if you tried.

One time, at band camp....

So, back to a fact that is relevant. The firefighters have stated they need water! Can't fight fire without it. THis bag of :poop: has been kicked down the road by politicians for decades. This is a prime example of how Gov't has failed us all. This is a pillar of Gov't; to protect its citizenry.

For the LA Mayor to land at the airport from Ghana and not have a single word to say? It's not like she didn't have a long flight to think of something to say. SHe showed zero empathy for her constituents.

We have an active "Fire Smart" program in our hood. A technician visits all the homeowners and politely give tips to the owners. Maybe this would not work near Hollywood as he might get shot. However, all it takes is a few homes who don't follow the Fire Smart program and their home sets off a fire storm. Removing pine needles from the roof, removing shrubbery from against the house and using fire proof siding all helps. In Fort Mac after the fire storm hit the city, they found homes that were Fire Smart safe, standing just fine amongst a street of burned down homes.

Also, with 60-90 mph winds, neither fixed wing nor rotary aircraft are going to be firefighting.

And will likely be reelected by the same folks who's homes were destroyed.
