Outsourcing may be an economical alternative. Like I said, use MIGs ..they got plenty of idle stuff looking for a buyer. Perhaps a reemergence of the "lend/lease" thing could be adopted.

McCaffrey calls USAF “badly underfunded,” with its manpower falling, modernization programs lagging and aging aircraft. There’s a need for defense capability that can “guarantee a . . . punitive air, sea and cyber-strike using conventional weapons capable of devastating the offensive power of a foreign state—and which can hold at risk their vital national leadership and economic targets,” he says. The general then notes that such airpower capabilities are not possible with the current defense allocation of 4% of GNP.

Yep ..now we apply the "after the fact" reinforcement campaign to seat the fear factor. Notice that these types were silent until now. Never warning at the onset of deficiencies ...only and always when the damage is beyond being reasonably manageable ..always when great sacrifice will be required in terms of $$$ spent.

Same story ..different day/month/year/decade.. bridges, schools, waste water treatment plants, water supplies, fed highway net ..power production ...and lending institutions .... everything a crisis. Everything that's gonna need to have tons of money thrown at it.

I'll open up a new vein.

comparing the lifespan of B-52s and F-15s is like comparing a diesel truck and a formula one car. any fighter is designed for much higher performance at the expense of longevity. Bombers don't pull 9 Gs as routine. our current fighter fleet is the oldest our fighter fleet has ever been. even the F-111 and F-4 fighters were retired sooner, they only remained in service as recon or radar jammers, less stressful service.

They are still producing C-130s, they have retired almost all of the C-130e models, the only ones models still in use are H and J models that are much newer. E and old models suffered from a small problem of the wings falling off.

Fresno ANGS, where this article originates, had F-16s and found them to be not up to the task after 9-11. the F-16 lacks the range and higher cruising speed required for the intercept role they now perform.

BTW this article is almost 2 months old. the remedy for most of the affected aircraft was a simple inspection. it mostly affected the two seater variants.

Does this mean that we got a good bang for the buck ..or that we allowed the fleet to decay to standby status out of lack of proper replacement protocols? Nuke reactors never broke 30 years in commercial service either until they stopped planning new ones ..and those in service hit 30+ years. Now they're pushing the envelope too. Was the old standard too conservative ..or was the cost of retiring/replacing just too much to face until ...it's a crisis??
