A month ago I had a mouse build a nest in my defroster grate of my ford fusion. I cleaned, and sanitized it, then shot some new car smell thru the hvac system. I also gave the floor mats a quick light spray.

Now today the air blows very rancid like my ozium spray went bad. How can I fix this?

Ive always had luck using the armor all smell remover but they are all strong smelling for a day or so before it gets rid of the problem. Armor all even has the fogger can that you set off inside the car.

It smells like burned maple syrup. I have had aerosol cans of ozium go rancid and didnt know it, and when I went to spray it, the smell was idenitcal. So i am confident it is that.

I did spray a lot thru the duct work

If your car comes equipped with a cabin air filter you should try to find one with an activated charcoal element. This will help absorb any remaining chemicals.

You could try a Chlorine Dioxide odor bomb like Adams/P&S/Bio Bomb/etc make. You can even get little aerator to make them work faster.

I just used a chlorine dioxide product on the CRV I am rehabbing and could not believe the difference it made. Really impressed. It comes in a little dry-powder satchet that you mix with water and then let it sit 24 hours.

I tried the Mother's bomb in my wife's beetle after our niece borrowed it and smoked weed in it. It had the Lysol effect. Attempted to cover up the smell and made everything worse. I'll try the chlorine and cabin filter (if it has one).

Pull the blower motor for a more thorough inspection
Kick panels/cowl too

The Chlorine Dioxide bomb on recirculate for a while could be the answer too

Consider an A/C refresher kit to clean the evaporator
Most of the kits are the same, only Toyota bothered with the video

UPDATE:

Wait till you hear this one........

After the ozone treatments, the rancid chemical smell did not resolve. I steam cleaned each vent port for over 5 minutes each while running the ozone as well. I found the smell to be concentrated on the drivers side vents much more than the passenger. Like over 2 times more potent.

Come to find out, I got a free 12 oz bottle of grain alcohol hand sanitizer back during covid, and it worked its way back deep in the drivers side door pocket. My state map, a few blue paper towels, hid this bottle from view. Here the rancid gel / grain alcohol forumula exploded and the paper soaked it all up. Whenever the AC was on, it would draw the odor in, and blast it in your face out the vents.
