"In general" covers a lot. Do some? Sure. Do I? In some ways yes, but in others not as much as I used to.
Learning to do UOAs saved me from a stranded Windstar last year when coolant started appearing in the oil, at a mere 178K or so.
Good on the owner of the Windstar.

Yes people over think imo. Any oil with specs that meet your car will suffice. Other parts of car will go bad before engine.

I'm doing Pennzoil Ultra Platinum every 5,000 miles, that'll be me I hope!

Well zamadison, the guy is probably a BITOG member and learned that by changing his conventional oil every 5k miles that his engine would give him good service.

Overthinking it all, What do you expect out of a site named what it is?

Gives us something to think about and discuss as well as a multitude of other minutia.

Some here are OCD and have super clean engines due to their diligence in oil changes an selections. Good for them. Others are here to study and learn from the site.

I am glad to read this stuff and glad it is here. Glad to know there are folks who care to share information.

So to all you over thinkers, I am on your side. Keep up the good work and overthink away.

Yeah, did most of you actually look at his UOA? Pretty bad.

This is not a prescription of how to treat an engine.

Of course it's overthought. As long as it's a name brand oil, it really doesn't matter. But of course there are better for different applications.

For 10k Mille oil changes, is SuperTech conventional up to the task? Probably not.

Is Mobil 1 EP? Probably

I have no preferences, I've run Chevron Supreme HM, Pennzoil HM, and Pennzoil Platinum HM in my Camry. My next oil change will be Mobil 1 EP.

Of the 3 oil changes on my car, I have spent $2.50 in oil. That's it. $0.50 a quart for the Chevron Supreme HM. The Pennzoil was free from Pennzoil.
The Mobil 1 EP was $2.00 a quart, I splurged on it. After that it'll probably be $1 a quart Pennzoil Ultra or $2 a quart Mobil 1 AFE

I trade my cars at 200k........

Yeah - he's got 300k on an engine known to eat head gaskets. Sure there is antifreeze in the oil and it's looking a little tired. But it's a 21 year old car with 300k! If it blew tomorrow he got his $$ worth.

Yup. Its a hobby. Just like any other strange things people do. Have any of you seen how I dress on the weekends?
