Opinions on this Kohler standby generator?

My neighbor put in a 4 cylinder 24(I think)K Generac and propane tank last year. He finally mentioned the full cost. $24,000, 6,000 was a 500 gallon propane tank, filled up. This is close to Houston, TX. Just some info to share. The thing that gets me nowadays are all these 30 second outages we are having in perfect weather, had 2 today. Whole home gen would not help, we need UPS I guess. Cable, router, and TV's all take around 6 minutes to reboot. They are installing a Battery Farm a few miles from us, might be why. Fairly large install, hope it helps. We are not big on EV's in my area so maybe they can charge the batteries at night instead of a bunch of cars.

Yep, a UPS is a must. Every computer, network device, TV etc is on a double conversion UPS in my house

Used to live in a house that did that several times a month.

Wouldn't something like this be way better than those home rated generac generators that everyone installs? This thing doesn't say much about the engine though. I think it says 2.2 liter turbo charged, runs off LP/natural gas. I'd prefer a diesel model honestly.

Stay away from diesel IMO. Get LP/NG for fuel. LP gives more torque and NG more HP iirc. Or reverse. Anyways, LP is stable and has a looooooong storage life in the tank without intervention. NG is nice if an option. Both burn super clean compared to gasoline/diesel.

I'm of the thought of buy once, cry once. This is knowing the older I get, the less I want to mess with a generator in inclement weather when the power is likely to go out. I've done it enough. Once I was without power for two weeks. Never again. Lesson learned, I went with a big liquid cooled genny that's still the best home improvement decision I have made. Most liquid cooled generators are also quieter than their air cooled counterparts. More expensive, yes. But IMO the juice is worth the squeeze in this situation.

I will say the guy I eventually went with for the install said he would only install a Generac or a Briggs genny. He installs a LOT of generators. Take that for what it's worth when you go to pick one.

I had a 18kw Generac running off Natural Gas (816cc with hydraulic lifters) installed this past April.

I have just under $9500 in it completely installed using a local electrician.

I live on a bad grid for storms and after six years it was a necessary purchase. Ran a 4kw up till then for sump pumps and fridge/freezers.

Has already ran ten hours earlier this month due to power loss.

My 20 kw Generac inverter generator is offline because some critical parts are no longer available from the manufacturer. The generator is about 13 years old. I am not happy.

That's terrible. Like closing a road without telling you about the detour.
Had the issue with my mower. Can't remember what it was. It was either the belt or the spindle they didn't have in stock, but they had plenty of the new number Try parts tree. They may sell parts for generac

That's a clutch find, @SupremePossum ! But yes, sometimes the manufacturers aren't great about thinking...at all. Unfortunately, the days of legitimate customer service are behind us IMO.
'Aint that the truth! I have given up all faith and hope of ever receiving any, let alone good customer service/support for any product that I buy. I basically don't bother calling or emailing because I know that there is just nothing there...

That said, I was more than just pleasantly surprised a while back.. was having issues with a water softener, so I emailed the company that I bought it from - not only did I get a response, but the fellow went out of his way to help! After ordering some parts, I saw the same name on the "sent from" line as I did from the email sig line, so obviously a small company.. But still it gives me a shred of hope.

I found that part from just Googling and finding a document stating the updated part, but I'm wondering @k1xv if you call the main Generac number, will they tell you that same information? Would be an interesting test

Kohler are supreme to Generac, but I do wonder if it will be harder finding Kohler parts in the long run, just because there are less of them out there

Kohler makes plenty of commercial/industrial type generators

I can confirm that during 2 extended hurricane induced power outages, we never lost natural gas. Made boiling water convenient. Not sure I would bet my life on it - but I would go that way as well, with a small gasoline backup for end of times.

I would agree 30KW is a lot. Maybe if you need to run the AC/Heat/dryer and electric range at one time. My wife would try.
Yup - same house since 1996 - never lost NG …
