Just like transmissions, we just replace the entire thing since our rates so over the top so not worth it and our techs only know how change entire components not fix things...

I spend some time in an earlier one with the v6 and manual trans. It was a pleasure to drive and the interior layout was superb. The drivetrain was a dream.
BUT, it had a tendency to eat plug coils, which weren't cheap. It lost an aluminum rim in an unassuming pothole. It lost a window motor after that... it nickeled and dimed the owner a good bit until he traded it.
I've read that the auto trans in this thing is sturdy but clumsy. shifts firm when it should be soft, shifts soft when it should shift firm.
As unreliable as they are, if I wanted quirks and a plastic cooling system, I'd pick up an early 2000s 5-series. a LOT more car for the headache involved.

I've read that the auto trans in this thing is sturdy but clumsy. shifts firm when it should be soft, shifts soft when it should shift firm.

My wife and I looked at a Lincoln LS in 2001 prior to buying our Lexus. It was a nice driving vehicle but the interior/trunk space was very poor and I would have hated to subject any passengers into the back seat especially in the foot area under the front seats and the center driveshaft tunel. The trunk was long and wide but very low for luggage, rendering it almost useless.
After we bought the Lexus which we still have BTW, our neighbors leased a new LS and ultimately, couldn't wait for the lease term to end.
We just couldn't find enough to like about the Lincol LS for the money($38K-$40K). And although we ended up with a Lexus RX-300 SUV(apples/oranges compared to the LS) this has been the typical Lexus owner experience! Only now after almost 12 years of ownership, are we experiencing any issues with the vehicle(all fixable)!
And yes, I understand that the OP can get the LS for ~ $5K and for that money, it may be a great buy, IDK! The OP has to decide! I look at it this way...If the LS wasn't such a great car when it was new, it's only going to be worst now! It's not a fine wine

IIRC, it's a variant of the 5R55. It will start you in second unless you exceed something like 50% of throttle. Some other weirdness differentiates it from the Explorer/Ranger 5R55W.

Low mileage LS's seem to be hard to find and prices are higher. I had one for about 8 months 2000 LS v8 one owner in new like condition even smelled like a new car.
Had 30K on it loaded bought for $9000 wife loved it no problems, bit we had too many vehicles so I sold it when I received the best offer from a middle aged man who loved these cars he already had an LS with higher mileage so he was looking for a low mileage version and offered me $10,500 I sold it and and I made a quick $1500 after we drove it 5,000 miles.
