Only "true" synthetic is 0W30?

While getting the wifes oil change at a local brake shop, I inquired about the price of a oil change for my Silverado using Mobil 1. He proceeded to tell me he did not carry it but that he sold Amsoil, he recommended it, and that the Amsoil 0w30 is a true synthetic oil and the Mobil 1 5w30 I have been using is not.

He proceeded to tell me that if it is not a 0w30, it is not a full synthetic but rather a blend.

Any truth to this? Sounds like he is pushing the Amsoil pretty hard!

Based on US law about what constitutes a synthetic motor oil, Mobil 1 is a synthetic.

If you want to go by the degree their base stock is man-made, then Amsoil and Royal Purple beats it.

Jesus, not this again...

First off, trusting guys who work there generally is not a good idea. The idea of "synthetic" in this country is very loosely defined. Mobil 1 is a synthetic, but not the same type of synthetic as Amsoil.

So, according to what he is saying, none of the other quality Amsoil products are synthetics.

I would find another place to get my oil changed.

Changed sentence per some constructive criticism.

Did you mean "none of the other quality Amsoil products are synthetics" ?

Sorry, I could not help it.

Hmmm, even if we use the most stringent definitions of a synthetic, such as primarily Group IV and V, we have more than just 0w-30. GC happens to fit that definition and is that grade. There is also Mobil 1 0w-40. There is Delvac 1 ESP 5w-40. The other grades of Amsoil fit the definition. So does Royal Purple. There are all kinds of exotic boutique oils, at varying prices and grades, that would fit that definition as well.

I know there are literally dozens of other oils that I've missed that would fit the Group IV/V definition. Let's not forget that things like PP, PU, Syntec, Edge, Valvoline synthetic, and others that fit the Group III/III+ are all excellent oils.

Yes, dparm, Jesus, not this again. My suppliers tell me all kinds of whoppers, too. Only Syntec is real synthetic. Anything except Syntec is real synthetic. Only RP is real. Only Amsoil is real. Only Mobil 1 is real.

In my rounds today, I met a lady running a new local oil supplier. Not only does she know more about oil than 95% of the parts people I've met, she also offers better prices than Walmart! Perhaps bassadict69's local brake technician can get an oil education from my local lady. She knew all about VW/Audi, Benz, BMW, and Volvo specs. She can get me Mobil 1 0w-40 in Canada for $4 per litre. Yes, I had a stroke.

Does he sell the XL series? That is as much a synthetic as the Mobil 1 5W30 he was bashing is. How about Mobil 1 0W30? LOL

Not another one of these threads.

That's not a bad idea. Considering how cheap the oil already is there, it's got to be even better with employee discount. A woman who knows European oil specs inside out (and does her own oil changes, I might add) and knows more about oil than most mechanics and parts people is a rare bird.

I can't wait to give my local RP/Castrol/SOPUS supplier a hard time about this. He's been beaten on knowledge and price hands down, by a woman, to boot.

Maybe he means Amsoil is the only company to have a product called 100% Synthetic

Perhaps Red Line should come out with a line of oils called "True Synthetic"

Fully Synthetic is a looser definition that includes group 3, 4, and 5 and this is what we go by here in these boards and by US law. The reason is that at this point, additives start playing a more important role

Sorry about starting another one of "those" threads! LOL! I in no way was accepting what he said as gospel, which is why I am asking here, I know he is selling the stuff so is pushing it really hard. He even went as far as to give me a bottle of the Amsoil to take home & research it & read up!

As far as using him for oil changes, he is doing an oil change on my Monte Carlo using Pennzoil for $24.95, including all top offs, lube, as well as tire rotation. I cannot easily get under this car so for that money, I will definitely let him do this one. My truck on the other hand, I can get under easily so I will continue to change the oil in that one myself!

To bad that the moving parts in engines never studied US law.

I would hope that the makers of the law would study moving parts in engines rather than the engines studying laws....

You expect the makers of laws to pay more attention to physical reality, than the dollar?

Group III base stock oils are called "Synthetic" in the USA only.

Group IV/V base stock oils are "true 100% synthetic" in every country of the world.

AMSOIL, RP, and Red Line all formulate true 100% synthetics.

Mobil 1 has a few true 100% synthetics in their line up as well, but most are group III.

AMSOIL's XL line have group III base stocks, and they too have "Synthetic" printed on the bottle. Although, IMO if it doesn't say "100% synthetic" or I know it is PAO/Ester based....it doesn't deserve "synthetic" to be printed on the label.

Gotta love the US legal system.
