I miss my 1987 535is; it was one of my favorite Bimmers. That said, the Super eta in the 1988 528e is also a great motor.

But my own choice would be a Volvo 240 wagon ( made from the 70's till 1993) A 1993 Classic model (a special run of 1800 cars with special equipment for the North American market) would be ideal. The "redblock" inline 4 is known for durability, normal wear parts are inexpensive and available new or used, aftermarket or OEM. If you can work on a car, this one will be easy for an owner to keep going. Just keep it away from the dealership.

I love the idea of a 300TD or 244 wagon but were disqualified because of their 0-60 times. I think for me personally, it would have to be a 5speed 740 Turbo wagon...if they exist on this side of the Atlantic. At least then I would be able to keep a new-ish Altima 2.5S in sight on short entrance ramps. Most current midsize cars are through the quarter mile by the time a 300TD hits 60.

Comfortable, styling is aging quite well, incredibly fast, 4WD, fairly reliable for a supercar.

If I really needed to haul stuff, I could always rent a van or truck for the day.

X2 but since I'm retired. I look forward to the new Audi A3 sedan. 66 years old now and should be good for the remainder of my driving life.

I'm a sports car guy and it's tempting to go for something fun.

However, the Ford F150, supercrew, 4x4 lariat V8 is one comfortable and capable truck. And, it can do everything I need to do. (yes, I own one)

So, that's my choice.

I change my pick. I had previously chosen my current ride, due to the utility it offers and fun-for-the-money it offers. But since reliability is a given (as one of the rules), then I have to go with perhaps the best thing on four wheels ever offered...

I will have my homologation model in blue...

I have to say it would have to be a 2002 or 2003 Golf TDI, manual transmission, either the one I already have or one just like it. Properly modified, they have plenty of power, comfort, longevity, corrosion resistance, and fuel economy. With a tow hitch and utility trailer, it can substitute for a small pickup.

1999-2003 Ford F-250/350 w/ 7.3 diesel. Crew Cab long bed 4x4. 4r100 transmission. Great for any task, acceptable fuel milage, easy to work on, reliable, capable, and great to drive.

Considering my financial situation and future prospects it's my 18 year old Ford Contour. It's my "poor man's BMW". It's just short of 100,000 miles and runs great, handles great and the body is rust free. I garage it from late Fall till there is no more salt on the roads. It could be worse, at least it's not a Vega, Pinto or Pacer

The only thing I would change would be to go with the 3.0 Vulcan. for no other reason than it was built here.(Ford Lima Engine Plant). gotta go for the hometown stuff.(they now make the Duratec 3.5l(Cyclone)and possibly the 3.7(same block, bigger bore)
the Aerostar i drove 16-19(with the Vulcan), was Cayman Green, Love that Color.

and i'm not even a Ford Guy. I've owned a Chevy,Olds, Hyundai, and currently a Dodge, which i hope to replace with another Dodge.
but I've always had a soft spot for that gen ranger, esp in Cayman Green.

incase anyone is not familiar with cayman green, this is the color we are talking about. in standard daylight it's tealish, but under yellowy lights it turns more dark navy, and in certain low light situations, with a camera flash, the picture can turn out almost "mopar blue"(we have photos of our aerostar where you'd swear it was very blue, but it was cayman green)

would it be automotive sacrilege to paint my neon this(ford) color? would the car gods hunt me down and do things to me?
