OMG!! VW Oil Prices!

Well....they've already made it illegal to grow, share, trade or sell your own food in the US so maybe it's not so silly that they won't allow you to change your own oil

before you ask, see senate bill S510

petrol stations are always the most expensive place to buy oil

our stations in England usually have the 1ltr bottles at £16 each and the 5ltr cans at £50 each

It's probably best to stop with the melodrama and misinformation. Nothing in S510 applies to anyone with gross sales of less than a half a million dollars. How on earth is that stopping you from growing your own lettuce?

have to agree with riggaz and scurvy. Here in Slovakia the petrol stations are the most expensive place to buy oil. The second most expensive place is the authorized car dealership

The price of the oil can be up to 3 times higher compared to an e-shop. The funny part of it is that some car dealerships do sell the same oil via a local store and e-shop at the same time but with 200% margin.

Ffor example 1L of Shell Helix Ultra Diesel ~9Eur for eshop vs. the 26Eur at local Shell petrol and 25Eur in local Honda authorized dealership.

just price overview from one Slovak e-shop:

Castrol EDGE Turbo Diesel 5W-40 8Eur/L
Castrol EDGE 5W-40 8.50Eur/L
MOBIL 1 TURBO DIESEL 0W-40 12Eur/L
MOBIL 1 NEW LIFE 0W-40 10.6Eur/L
Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 7Eur/L

not that bad for the main stream oil. on the other hand the brands like gulf, motul are quite expensive here.

I don't want to drag this thread off topic. But our Eurocopter has a ZF transmission. They are known for making metal due to excessive wear. The "FIX" , expensive European oil. At a modest $200 per Liter.

Guess what? Doesn't work! Hard to believe, I know...

Good old American made turbine engine oil, changed regularly works just fine. In fact, I've already exceeded the "expected" lifespan, using only 2380! But I change it regularly, like any BITOG nerd would.

Just 2 days ago I was shaking my head in disgust that MC 5W-20 is now $18.33 for a 5-qt jug at Wally's, up from $11.50 a year ago. Now I feel silly.

$6.50 a quart isnt TOO too high. Ive seen $8 a quart, and i feel that GC at $8.19.. you have to justify the purchase, for sure.

perhaps reality is about to impact a lot of Countries around the World - including the US! From my perspective US prices are VERY cheap - and unsustainable in the long term

Europe has always had high lube prices by comparison and this is one reason why "conditioning" for long OCIs started a couple of decades back!

Here in OZ, 4 litres of low grade lube is around $A20-$A30. Castrol Edge 0W-40 is typically around $A80-$85 and Mobil 1 0W-40 is $A80-$A95. One Litre packages of these two range from around $A18-$A25

Doug and the rest....Thanks for the update on oil prices. I guess you have to try and find bargains and deals and load up when you can.

I have been trying to maintain a stash of quality motor oils.....for the inevitable to become reality.....$15 to $20 a quart "full synthetic", by US standards.

Then a 10K-15K or longer, OCI will become the norm.

Doug, in Repco the other day, Castrol EDGE 0W-40 was $106.95, and even Repco's home brand diesel oil was $29.95 for 5L.

As an aside, a workmate with a VW wanted to halve his OCI for the short term, and approached his castrol agent about oil, and was told that they only sell it to VW dealers, and that he could buy it there..at ridiculous prices mind you.

Dealers make up the difference in labor and parts, though.
