My girl friend has a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt SS S/C it has 14K miles on it I just changed the oil with Valvoline SynPower 5w30 and a AcDelco filter I was just wondering how often the oil should be changed or should we just go by the OLM. The car is often reved above 3k-4k rpm on a daily basis and is only driven about 10 miles round trip a day with a 20-30 mile round trip once a week

To take all the guessing out of the osi run till the olm gives you the change # then get a uoa to see how the oil is holding up.

The 10 mile daily commute, is that drive 5 miles then the car sits and cools off or is that one round trip of ten miles all at once?

Either way thats kinda of a short daily commute. I would tend to change before the OLM was all the way down to 0%. I have a 2.2 I just bought(5,500 miles currently), I plan to run the OLM down to around 30% and get a oil analysis done, we'll see where its at then.

On a side note, was the Delco filter you got labeled as Hengst or Champ? Hengst is labeled made in USA with Hengst name on it, the Champ is made in Bulgaria I think with no name on it.

crazycrak,

Since you using such a good brand of synthetic oil I'd go by what the OLM tells you based on the driving habits you and your girl has.

For myself I just purchased 3months ago a new 08' Impala SS and with the OLM istalled I'll do it's first OCI when it indicates which will be in about another 1700K miles.

With the high price f synthetic oil these days you need to get every useful drop of service outta the oil so use the OLM all the time and trust it.

Just curious, how many total miles will be on the oil at that point? Is that at 0% on the OLM or at 10%?

I have 4,500 miles on the oil in the crank of my 2.2 currently and the OLM is only down to 73%. At that rate the oil will have well over 10,000 miles on it before the OLM gets down that low. Maybe I'm just an old school curmudgeon but that seems like a lot of miles for a 6094 spec oil. I know the Synpower is a 4718 spec oil but it's TBN is very low to begin with. How many miles is Synpower good for?

IMO!

X2.

This was exactly what i was thinking. Short trips, motor still breaking in, SC engine, etc...
I beleive the AC delco filter should be good for 10k, i don't know if the VS would be good for that long in an aspirated engine.

Wow the OLM must really ramp down quicker with the S/C, makes sense. Like I said my OLM is at 73% with 4,500 miles on the oil....Huge difference! Am I that much of a granny driver....lol.

If the OLM is returning those type of miles down to 0%, I dont see any harm in following it.

Thats 5 miles then sets all day and 5 miles back home Im pretty sure the filter is the Hengst whats the diffrence which is better

I prefer the Hengst but they are getting tougher to find. The only way I've found the Hengst around here is to buy the 458G part which also includes a new Cap.

Really, I've been told that the Champ is a fine filter it appears to be the same as the Wix and the Wally part....all are labeled as made in Bulgaria if I remember right.

The OLM has no idea what oil is in the crankcase. And there is no provision for alternating between the two.
It measures a multitude of events including Ambient Temp, Engine Temp, Total Engine RPM's, Total Idle RPM's, Cold Start cycles and Mileage among others.

So, I repeat: Is the OLM calibrated for regular dino or synthetic oil? Makes a big difference if one is using synthetic in a dino calibrated OLM system, or vice versa. As you say, the OLM has no idea what oil is in the crankcase. It can only assume that the correct, manual specified oil is being used.

From what I was told from this forum tha the GM "OLM" is geared for DINO oil. I want to use a synthetic as a buffer cuz I'm still use to doing my OCI's at 3K instead of 6K.

LS2JSTS,

Currently I have about 4700K on the odometer now and the electronics say 15%.

As far as the oil goes it's the standard factory oil so according to this foruum GM uses most likely Mobil 5000 oil so in the past replies it should go/last until the guage tell me to change over to fresh oil. Either way I'm close to getting it changed now so to do so early doesn't go over well with me. The GM OLM is suppose to be a well thought out system so I was told to begin trusting it cuz my old ways of changing our out every 3K was considered too conserative. Based on other forums I've read people now go close to well over 5K to somewhere around 7500 before they even consider changing the oil.
