oil vs oil

I was reading here a while back that HDEO is higher in quality or maybe I should say, a better option than using PCMO. My question is that I want to run the best oil that fits my needs and I buy HDEO in bulk for the farm. I use this in alot of different engines but I have always bought synthetics for my personal vehicles. Am I doing this right or will the HD oils out perform my mobil synthetic?

The pcmos are better for economy and probably cold starts. Hdeo's excel with more detergents and a higher tbn. Usually the Hdeos have a higher hths. So it depends how you use the vehicle. Towing and dirtier enviroments hdeo. Just driving back and forth to work a pcmo.

use synthetics if you are doing long oci's todays oils are so close and besides the term "synthetic" is a very "loose" term years ago synthetic was used for an oil made in a lab today a group 3 oil can be called a synthetic..There are very few real synthetic oils...

I'm not going to say what's best, but I will say you can't go wrong with an HDEO, especially a synthetic HDEO.

When my parents were in trucking we bought bulk Pennzoil Long life 15w40, we used it everything cars, vans, pick-ups, big trucks(of course) atvs, motorcycles, lawnmowers etc... never had a problem, this was in Pennsylvania, with very harsh winters. No problems with cold starts or anything. I kept the one pickup and traded it with 129,000 miles and it never used a ounce of oil between changes.

What does "out perform" mean to you?

Thanks for all the reply's. I get the impression that a high quality HD oil would exceed my needs. I don't feel I ask more from my equipment than a mainstream oil could deliver, it's more of that "warm fuzzy" feeling I get when I service my personal vehicles, knowing that I'm giving them the best lubrication I can afford.
I have been using Mobil 15-50 synthetic in a high performance application since '01. Against my better judgement, my motor builder told me to switch to Mobil from 50w Kendall. Well after several years of no oil related failures I switched all my pampered vehicles to it also (M1). So when I read that HDEO might exceed, or be "better" than an automotive synthetic, I wanted some input. Hate to be wrong about that "warm fuzzy" yaknow

What vehicles are we talking about here?

What type of use/mileage will they see?

'IF' you need a one size fits all answer, the rec. for Rotella 10w30 is the best one.

You guys aren't saying to change the bulk oil to 10-30 are you? Right now I'm using 15-40 Rotella as my fits all oil, class 8 to lawnmowers.
My garage vehicles include my wifes H2, (commuter), '83 camaro bought new with 21000 miles, '01 8.1 silverado trailer toter with also around 21000, '67 firebird hope to be finished next summer, and son's '98 4.3 p'up. Thanks
