OLM is at 40% and mileage is coming up on 8,000 miles. This will be the first oil/filter change for the CR-V. I'm leaning towards using Havoline 5W-20 or Motorcraft syn blend 5W-20. Suggestions, comments, and other oil choices welcomed.

Thanks guys,

Lance F

Either is great. Had a person post pics recently of his 2 liter Hnda valvetrain at something like 110k miles on mostly Havoline 5W-20, with 7.5k miles OCI's, and it was spotless.

Lots of good choices for a 5w-20. Based on what I can buy in the 5 Quart container at Wal Mart I would go for the Pennzoil Platinum at $19, or the Pennzoil Yellow Bottle at $11, or the Motorcraft Blend at $10.36.

Think the Pennzoil Platinum will provide you a little better protection if you are going to take the OLM down to ~30% or below or start approaching 10 k.

My 2 cents.

I'm taking the OLM down to 30 or maybe 20% based on Honda recommendations for keeping the factory fill in there which is supposedly loaded with moly (or the moly from the internals being coated with the stuff from the factory). From then on it'll be 5K mile oil changes with dino or syn blend.

Keep the comments and suggestions coming.

Thanks guys

I think the best choice is conventional. However, in my newly acquired '97 CR-V (spotless top end at 105k on conventional) I am going to use Redline, mainly because I have been using Redline in my other car and want to continue my experimentation with it.

I'd use Pennzoil YB over the PP. Both are great but I have not been impressed by PP UOAs in comparison. I would use any of the other conventionals mentioned, too.

In that engine it will just not make any difference one way or another, no matter what IMO.

Mobil makes Honda's oil. Not very impressive in my opinion. My advice is to decide on a good synthetic oil and stick with that brand for the life of the vehicle. My dad's 02 odyssey has 270k and he has used Mobil1 since 17k and when I did the last timing belt at 245k it was still spotless under the valve covers.

Run the OLM down to 15% before you change the oil (just my opinion)

I use Havoline 5w-20, but like PZYB too. OLM at 40% (50% actual) is reasonable with dino in a brand-new vehicle. Hope you like it, we love our 10 year old CRV as much as our new Accord.

For the K series engine, a syn or blend would really be a waste with 5k OCI's. Just use any reputable 5w-20 dino that's on sale, IMHO.

Definitely check out the thread addyguy mentioned... The poster had an RSX with the K20 engine on 7.5k OCI's on conventional, and it was squeaky clean under the valve cover.

PP gets my vote, you guys a lucky down there, we canadians pay about 3 bucks less for PP over M1 (which is about 32 bucks CDN for PP and 35 for M1 when not on sale)

M1 is on sale alot these days so its even [censored] but I still choose Pennzoil Platinum because it made my engine sound better (quieter) and also its HTO-06 certied.

I've got it running in an acura rdx btw so my only choices are M1 or PP.
