Good enough reason as any.

We do the whole coupon/rebate thing for a variety of stuff which often (for us) yields cheaper prices on brand name stuff than store brands with the tradeoff of hassle from the time it takes checking prices, shopping lists for different store, etc. Works for us, but like I said, I'm in Walmart to get stuff too, just depends on the item.

If you see motor oil rebate terms, a lot of them specifically exclude Walmart, and some exclude Target, Amazon, or other large discount retailers. Makes a lot of sense if XOM has a special deal with Walmart, which includes an agreement that they won't take part in rebates. So that tells me there's probably a larger margin.

They do, there are over 5000 Autozones in the US generating 9+ billion dollars annually.

Autozone likes to make a larger profit. I never see Autozone stores go out of business.

Walmart has more volume, and they probably get cut a deal since they also have a quick lube service in most stores.

Another issue is who goes to Walmart asking for advice? I actually bought something on a Sunday morning at AutoZone and there were three people on staff and I was the only customer. For the most part, someone stocks the shelves at Walmart and that's it. Walmart has got to be the single biggest retailer of motor oil in the country.
