Is there any difference in the oil (all brands) that Walmart sells, than auto parts stores? Even some conventionals are almost 10 bucks cheaper for 5 qt jugs at Walmart.

Example Castrol as walmart vs Castrol at autozone? No Exactly the same only your wallet will know the difference.

Economy of scale.

Mobil's website even has a page that explicitly says, "The stuff at Wal-mart is the exact same."

When the search function gets improved, no new members join and the parts stores reduce their prices.

The only difference between the oil that Walmart sells and what your auto part store sells is that SOMETIMES the size of the container is different.

not true cruze, the oils sold at wal mart have a different additive package lessor then the oils at napa..thats how wal mart sells them cheaper then the auto stores..

According to? It would be really stupid for an oil company to offer a lessor product in identical packaging.

They buy everything on such a large scale that their cost is cheaper, therefore they can sell for less.

This gave me a good laugh.... yeah so every oil company has a special lesser wal-mart add pack myth! Have you ever looked at pqia they buy alot of their oils at walmart and they stack up against ones from the autoparts stores.

If there is a tolerance in the recipe for add pack, and if they brew up a big vat to bottle in 5 quart bottles for WM compared to 5.1 qt jugs for everyone else, one might notice a non-repeatable difference.

But their blend is going to be closer and more consistent from batch to batch than two seperate $20 VOAs from a mail order lab are going to show within one batch of the same stuff. In other words, a rounding error. And a WM blend would have just as good odds of being better than worse.

But they would not, could not make it cheezier, on purpose for WM. Not any more than Heinz would make worse catsup or Coke would make a different recipe soda. If they did they would be caught within the first month by this site and others.

Is this a serious comment or sarcasm?
If this is a serious comment you've gotta qualify it with some kind of evidence.
Considering many folks here get their oils tested one would assume that the add pack levels would fluctuate based on where the oil was purchased and someone here would have noticed something fishy going on.
Once a person considers that the additive package that's added to an oil works out to a cost of pennies a quart does it even make sense that an oil company would lessen them.
And wouldn't this less additized oil require some kind of API certification?

Sorry boxcartommie. I'm not buying it. In the few years I've been here I've seen you post some pretty questionable comments however this one,and the belief that gravel trap is better than engineered media(oil filter) are on par with the largest load I've read yet.
If you have evidence I suggest posting it because without it I'm sure you'll understand if people choose to ignore or disregard anything you write.
I've seen people convince themselves of some seriously absurd ideas however if you truly believe this, without evidence, then I can honestly say I've heard, seen and read it all.

There are a few minor differences:
1. Walmart has 5qt jugs, everybody else has 5.1qt or 5+qt.
2. Walmart's price is way cheaper.
3. Walmart bottles usually say "recycle used oil at Walmart" or something to that effect.
4. The great savings make my cars run better.
The product inside the bottle is exactly the same as other retailers.

Walmart can buy in MUCH larger quantities than the auto parts stores. That's why they get it cheaper. If you go to kohls and they them you want to buy 10,000 pairs of socks don't you think they would be willing to budge a little on the price?

Walmart sells oil add packs 5.0 quart called bacon while the auto part store sells the 5.1 quart add packs becon. This is why Walmart can sell it cheaper, once you go over 5.0 it is a whole different process to produce oil and this requires a very special add pack.

Exactly. When a company has the buying power like Walmart does suppliers will always give it to them cheaper.
Think Costco. We as consumers buy the club packs and because its volume the per unit price is reduced. Same principal only exponentially larger in the case of Walmart.
I'm willing to venture a guess that Walmart dictates to the supplier what they are prepared to pay. I'm betting its only a few points over cost however those few points translates into 10s of millions at the bare minimum.
I could be a bit off track with that inference but I'm betting not by much
