Oil Recommendations

Hi everyone. I am a new poster here and I was hoping to get some recommendations for which oil I should use at the next change. I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with a 4.7 liter V8. I'm a college student so i drive at most 3 times a months, and the vast majority of those miles are spent on the highway between Fort Collins and Denver. My manual suggests that I put 5w30 in.

Your opinions are most appreciated.

Your driving is very easy on oil, I would pick any conventional on sale at Walmart or auto parts stores and stick with 6k/6mos OCI's (Oil Change Interval). For oil filter, Purolator is a good oil filter that doesn't cost much, avoid standard Fram oil filter.

If you find synthetic on sale (with/without rebate), then you can extend OCI's to 10-12k/12mos.

I stay with 5W30 for the 10 years old Jeep. If your Jeep consumes oil such as 1-qt per 2-3k miles, I would try High Mileage oils and Valvoline Maxlife is well liked here.

That's pretty easy service, as long as you do not mix in 3 trips of
Pennzoil Platinum and Mobil 1: very good affordable synthetics
Valvoline conventional, Mobil, Pennzoil conventional, Castrol: very good, widely available conventionals

Then put a Mobil 1 filter on and leave it for a year. Change the oil after 6 months if you get conventional oil and after 10-12 with synthetic. Easy!

I forgot to mention that I bought this car from my dad and he worked this car very hard in the past. I am almost certain that there were times when he went 10,000 miles between oil changes. The engine does work well, but I was wondering if I should put an oil with a high concentration of detergents because of this. I am also planning on taking a road trip to California during winter break, so I might need a better oil. I have heard good things about Pennzoil Platinum on this site.

5w30 conventional oil will be fine. Many of the brand name conventional oils also have good detergent packages.

Your service factor (mostly highway a few timesa month) is probably the easist on a vehicle. There is no call for expensive synthetic fluids for your situation, especially for a collenge student; save your money for tuition and/or beer!
