Oil recommendations Please..

Hello, I'm new to forum, I just got a new 2010 4door Honda Accord 2.4 and getting ready for the first oil change i know there is NO perfect and or best oil but i did wanna hear some recommendations on different oils, Info about my driving 70-100 mph on the highway (i have a heavy foot)

close to 40-50 miles both ways home work then back home

5 days week @ least %80 of my driving is on the highway in crazy central florida weather. All opinions greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your time and advise.

PS Honda recommends 5w20.

Depends on your OCI. For me, I believe the synthetics hold up in the heat (I live in S-TX), so I will use them for the duration. The high speed driving also indicates syns, IMHO. All the major brands are fine oils.

Honda's 0w-20 will work for you, and looks like a very good oil -- likely better than their 5w-20 in every way except price.

My next pick would be Mobil 1 5w-20 or 0w-20.

Use one of those until the warranty runs out, and then revisit the issue at that time.

Sorry i didnt provide that info im planning to follow honda's orders and stick with 5k oil change or when the oil life hits 15 %- 20 % on the dash. Thanks again

My Odyssey van hits 20% around 6500-7000 miles. I use synthetic 5w-20. The 0w-20 is all but completely unnecessary in Florida (and S-TX).

especially given your high rate of driving, I would consider Mobil 1 Extended Life or Amsoil and run it 8k-10k miles. either oil is considered a 15k oil and there are plenty of used oil analysis reports here to back that up. if you are hesitant, start with 7k miles. or, if you really wanna follow your OLM, then run whatever oil you want: conventional or synthetic. of course, I will always run synthetic in anything that I care about - so, whatever is on sale or has the best rebate. right now you can get a rebate on Valvoline Synthetic. if you purchase 3 gallons.

im always a motorcraft semi-syn 5w-20 supporter, but if you dont dig it, then go with some kendall or pp.

The reason I recommended Honda 0w-20 is that based on the info available, it looks like a great oil overall and better than their 5w-20. The 0w rating is just a bonus.

I like the Mobil 1 Extended Performance or Pennzoil Platinum and change out every 7,500 miles.

Ihave used Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 every 5K on my 08 CRV since first change at 5K miles, now coming up on 25K miles total (12K per yr, bout 75%local, 25% Hwy mixed driving). Using Purolator Pure One filters on all my cars. At 5K mi., MM shows 50% oil life left every time. Oil does not look bad when I drop it at 5K, and will probably go to 6K intervals now from this point forward. Was a religious 3K OCI guy for YEARS (have been using syn oils for over 10 years too) until I got educated on extended oil change capability of syn oils.

Just asking, what info available are you referring to? The general consensus as far as I know is that the tighter the vis spread, (5w20 = 15 vs. 0w20 = 20) the better. I don't believe the "0" would help at all in Fl or S-TX...

I would go by the MM so you can stretch the interval past 5 weeks. And I'd start out with Motorcraft oil. If the interval is longer than 6000/7000 miles, switch to Mobil or Pennzoil synthetic.

The good things is, highway driving is the best thing you can do for your oil. If you are going to change it every 5K, pick your favorite brand of regular 5W-20 oil and go for it. If you are going to follow the OLM and let it run down to when it says change the oil, use your favorite 5W-20 synthetic.

Now, if you would have said you had a new 2-door Accord, my recommendation would have been different.

Don't know if this is your first Honda or not, but your going to love that little 2.4L engine

When you mention vis spread, the advice to which you're referring has to do with oils with higher viscosity indices tending to be less stable in some ways. I don't think that'll be a problem with this oil because the flash point is very high and Hondas are easy on oil anyway.

I also saw several posts here and on other forums referring to the 0w-20 being formulated for better fuel economy (it's used in all of Honda's hybrids) and usable in any Honda that specs the 5w-20 (not surprising since the 0w-20 is synthetic and the 5w-20 is either dino or a blend). Can't find those posts right now, though...

Once again, to be clear: This is comparing HONDA 0w-20 to HONDA 5w-20. If you're using other brands, and comparing synthetic-to-synthetic, it shouldn't matter which grade you pick.
