Experts,
I need an oil recommendation for a 1999 BMW M3 with a 3.2L S52 Inline 6 that has been modified with a Greddy Super 20g Turbo, running 14 psi.

This car was dynoed at 420!!!

This is car is driven VERY hard, with lots of racing.

In this setup, the owner would like to keep oil temperatures as low as possible, so please keep that in mind.

I was thinking Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5w40.

Thanks in advance for all suggestions.

Michael

Hi,
Michael - that is a VERY good choice. It has all you need for the wonderful S52 engine

The normal oil temps in my Z3 S52 are around 105C even after long stretches at 120mph at ambients around 42C (well over 100f)

This oil tolerates high temperatures/loads with ease and has a healthy HTHS vis. around 4.1cSt
The VANOS valve gear likes less viscous free flowing lubricants

Doug

Sorry Doug,
Its supposed to be the S52 engine, not S54. I've corrected it in the post.

Would you still recommend Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5w40 for that engine?

Michael

Hi,
yes that engine (S52) is one of the best they have made and is usually bulletproof
It will of course be the double VANOS "TU" version

BMW say to keep oil temps below 130C and that is why this oil with a HTHS of 4.1 is almost ideal.

Too "thick" can affect the VANOS operation

Redline 5W40. Search used oil analysis section fot Tyrolkids Red Line 5W40 used oil analysis in his highly modded turbo engine. As good a used oil analysis as you will ever see IMO.

Michael,

I think you need the Mobil 1, 0w-40 "European Formula" for this application. After all, Delvac 1 is a HD diesel oil and really isn't suitable for use in a high performance gas engine.

At least that's what all the experts keep telling me ....

Hi,
Ted - please tell ExxonMobil to remove this wording from their Delvac 1 5w-40 Datasheet sic "recommended for" ..........high performance gasoline engines."

Somebody like many hundreds of Porsche and BMW owners may already be tracking cars with it in! Oh I've just remembered Ted - they've been doing it for years with NO failures!!!

XXXX or Fosters TED?

Hi,
you are probably correct Rick!

Incidently, a wake for Rover MG will be held at 5.00 am here in Whitsunday on Monday along with the ANZAC service. Brekkie will be served later - only OZZies and Kiwis could celebrate a DEFEAT and the demise of a great car!!!

Goddam it, this the the third one I've attended for MG - the first was in 1958 in NZ and how I miss my time in ZA Magnettes in the Southern Alps of NZ!

Never mind the brekkie on Monday will be full of tales about MG TCs and my favorite the MG TF. I still miss my MGB - the Z3 is just tooooooo boringly reliable and sensible at 160kmh!!! I think I'll look around for another Triumph 2000 just to keep my fear and trepidation senses alive

Please don't tell Ted, Rick - he might attend and he is into those pesky German cars with weird oil requirements like VW502 or DB229.5 etc and Ampol, sorry Avon, sorry Ams.... don't make oils to those specs do they?

Doug,

I think I've got it now ...when you recommend Delvac 1 for gas engines, it's okay. But when I do the same thing (instead of recommending the 0w-40), I'm trying to get folks to switch from using the Mobil 1, 0w-40 to Amsoil.

This that about right?

BTW, I have NO long term business relationship with ExxonMobil and was not involved in the field testing that lead to the 0w-40 being named the factory fill for some of these high end Euro engines. Can you honestly say the same thing?

Ted

Hi Ted,
firstly I luv ya lotz!

Ted, I just confirmed the poster's suggestions here - nothing more

I can say with absolute honesty that I am not in ExxonMobil's pocket at all - and never have been!
I buy my products because they perform and that is why I run Commercial Accounts with both Castrol and Mobil! If a product is NOT cost effective it will NOT be used by me!!!!

I have done field testing with both Castrol and Mobil - more Castrol (since 1980) than Mobil (since 1997). I do not particularly like either Company's marketing ethics however

I worked happily for Caltex-Chevron-Texaco in the early 1960s in Copenhagen (Denmark) and in NZ
for a number of years. In Copenhagen I ran a Technical Training facility for Caltex-Chevron in Adelgade near Nyhavn for those that know that beautiful City. I lived in Taastrup - and later in Fredericksberg where I attended University

Ted, I have been self employed since 1988 and I SIGN THE CHEQUES! My longest serving employee has just clocked up 14 years!!!! I'm very proud of that!!

What about you Ted - was Werner von Braun really a good mate?

Ted, our exchanges add more than subtract from BITOG - keep happy

Doug,
one of my (overworked and underpaid) managers just picked up a TD...reckons that the oil filters are $500 plus.

What's the go with these things ?

edited (a couple of good reads are the "Whittle Story", and the old brit car magazine story on the Rover BRM gas turbine le mans car)

Hi,
I think I've got a TD filter in my cupboard. I'll check tomorrow.
They were a felt insert element with an "O" ring seal as I recall

I had a test drive in Chrysler's turbine in Detroit in 1975 - awesome stuff!!
The Wankel Benz at Unterturkheim was better though

Don't ya just love Ozzies 'n Kiwis?
No intellect and poorly edumacated wiff no Auto histree

Doug

If I ever come across an Irving head for a holden 6, then it's my mantlepiece trophy forever.

I recall an old article on the Chrysler turbines (mid 60s) where they gave a bunch of them to their regular customers for a trial... apparently the economy figures were skewed by people idling them for hours just for the noise...I could relate totally. (Last GT I played with had a 12cyl 2 stroke GM as a starter motor...starting was the best part).

I think that we need a "completely off topic" smiley.
