Greetings,

I have a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 CC 4x2 with the 5.3L V8/Vortec 5300. I've recently started having issues with lifter tick during the winter of this year, but I've never had that sort of issue before.

I tried replacing my Royal Purple 5w30 with Royal Purple 5w30 High Performance Sport and using a Royal Purple oil filter to help with the OCI.

Before I did the oil change, I ran Seafoam both through the engine, sucked it in through the vacuum line, and ran a tank of gas with it. None of these things seemed to help. I've tried adding a bottle of Lucas to the oil on the recommendation of some folks on various Silverado forums. I've also tried running Lucas top-end cleaner through the fuel several times with little change.

So, right now, I'm looking for recommendations on a good, solid oil that would work well with this truck and potentially also help with the lifter tick issue. So far, I've stuck with 5w30, but I'm open to both suggestions of different brands of oil and different weights as well, especially if anyone has had this issue and found a way to resolve it.

I've heard some people say that the FRAM ToughGuard filter has a silicone anti-drain back valve. The Royal Purple Filter has one, and both Wix and Mobil 1 filters all have one also, and I've never trusted FRAM, so I'd prefer to avoid them. I'm open to suggestions for oil filters, however. Before now, I used an over-sized Mobil 1 filter (M1-206 instead of an M1-107) but the last two changes have been a Wix and then a Royal Purple filter respectively.

I couldn't find the specs from Mobil 1 on their filters, but I could at least find the Wix specs for their models. The 51042 is stock and the 51522 is over-sized.

I also see WIX has WIX XP these days with "Wire-Backed/Synthetic" media as opposed to paper. Is this worth the extra money, and is there a possibility of it helping? Should I try using the M1-206 over-sized filter again, since before then I never had the issue. Sorry for the long-windedness of this post, but I'm trying to be thorough. I'm open to all suggestions, and I appreciate the help.

Cheers!

The main thing you want to fix is lifter tick.
For the solution that worked for me, see:
https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/3618392/1
My thought was, after hearing a tribologist (MolaKule) discuss it, was to try Polymeric Ester oil additives to seal and coat the hydraulic plungers better. Hyperlube ZRA worked to quiet my lifter tick, so I wondered what experience others had.

As you can read in the above threads, solutions people have had success with varied. Try Liquimoly MOS2 additive maybe. ... A I-hate-additives approach (actually very sane to hate them!!) is to switch to the excellent Castrol 0w-30 or 0w-40, as some say those cures it.

I'm fairly certain, and surprised, that Hyperlube ZRA worked in my case, since the tick noise happened a lot, then suddenly was gone after just a half-dose of Hyperlube ZRA. Feel free to use a full dose though, as this stuff doesn't hurt oil at all, blends nicely and its AW properties are synergistic with zddp.

Putting in highly polar oil may work. Castrol just came out with their Magnatec in the U.S. to replace the old Synblend line, and they claim extra polar molecules, more clingy slimy on metal.

I've got a 2005 with the 5.3 with 82,000 miles. I use Mobil 1 high milage with a AC delco 46 classic filter and have never had a lifter tick. I used German castrol 0w30 for most of those miles without a problem as well. I don't know what to tell you.

I just changed the oil on a friends 2004 Suburban with the 5.3 with 327k miles on it. All he has used is conventional oil changing anywhere from 4k to 8k. Still runs great and quiet.
Its a 2005 not 2015.

Sometimes it starts as soon as I turn on the truck, but other times, it doesn't start until just before it gets up to temperature, but either way, once the truck is up to temperature, the tick is gone completely.

Keep the RP oil, especially the HPS series. That is the most solid oil you can get. I would change the filter to a Purolator Synthetic and see if that helps. I have experienced start up ticking after using 2 different RP filters in the past.

I purchased my Silverado (6.0) with 100k on it about 4 yrs ago - it had a random tick when it was cold and only when traveling at hwy speeds (after initial start up - i live less than a mile from the hwy) and would go away within minutes of starting. I tried numerous oils , castrol, valvoline , maxlife , mobil 1 etc... and the only oil that worked for the first 1k miles with no tick was Amsoil Signature 5w30 . Issue would return though after about 1k miles - found out my oil pump was bypassing when it shouldn't be. I had the oil pump replaced 2 yrs ago and have not heard the tick since.
Only oil filters I was using at the time were either AC Delco or Purolaor P1
