Oil recommendation for Pentastar V6 after valvetrain replacement

Pentastar rocker arm and subsequent cam/lobe damage has nothing to do with oil. What you do is budget rocker arm replacement every 100k miles and fix as soon as you hear noise so you don’t damage the cam. This is a 15 year old problem, every oil has been tried. Rule of thumb: Pentastar V6 valvertain typically fail around 100k miles and Hemi V8 valvetrain typically fail around 200k miles. If you want/own/love these engines plan accordingly.
And no one has tried cryo and WPC?

Great minds think alike!!

201k on a 3.6 2014 Grand Cherokee Overland - no issues runs like new and quiet. Has been on a Full Synthetic diet of 5w/30 its whole life. Also have a 2020 Gladiator 3.6 at 76k miles and same diet - hope it lasts the same! Also my 2016 Ram 5.7 at 160k no issues on same 5w/30 syn diet and hope same long life as well!

What oil was run most of the 190k before the newer Valvoline?

Bought the van @ 65k, maybe 75k miles? Honestly for most of its life it was a combo of SuperTech / whatever was on sale with the occasional quick lube change when I didn’t feel like doing it for whatever reason. Only got serious about oil in the last 5 years or so as our fleet grew and I had more to take care of.

The van has been great overall, I put a thermostat in a while ago, and other than the rear AC unit crapping out early in our ownership it’s been solid until this last year or so. Had to replace the TIPM recently which was a fairly hefty bill. Maybe if I had more time and patience I could have worked out a cheaper fix but I’ve never been much for electrical diag.

I would run Mobil 1 ESP 0W-30, but the Pentastat does not require it. It can live a long, healthy life on any recommended oil.

I've been running Pennzoil Platinum, or Ultra Platinum 5w20 in my 2016 Cherokee since new (SuperTech Walmart filters). No abnormal noises and I frequently tow in the summer. Planning to stick with the same.

I wonder in cases of these 'problem engines' how long the owners have gone between oil/filter changes? I would wager most see 10K, 15K, 20K advertised on the oil bottles and figure they can fill and forget. I know folks like that, and nothing I say seems to motivate them otherwise. I feel sorry for the engines in their cars.

Meanwhile, the two 2016 vintage 3.6 VVT Pentastars in our fold get schedule of 4,000 mile oil/filter changes with Pennzoil 5W30 Platinum (or Ultra if it shows up around here).

My wife tends to do a LOT of short hop, stop & go driving in miserable traffic, 10 miles or less usually. In that case, I'll reduce the OCI to 3,000 miles. When she goes on road trips to see her relatives in Michiganistan, the OCI gets extended accordingly.

Call it wasting money, but as my grandfather used to say: quality oil is the cheapest thing you can put in your cars engines.

Hi guys,

Long time viewer few time poster, I live in suburbs outside Chicago. Daily driven 2019 Jeep grand Cherokee Laredo 88k on the clock. Mainly city/suburb occasional highway driving. I Bought it used with 40k mi in 2022.

Since owning the vehicle I consistently used Mobil 1 Extended Performance 0w20 and Mopar mo-349 oil filters for 5-8k OCI.

It fell to the dreaded “pentastar tick” recently had both intake cams, rockers, lifters, pcv valve, Vvl solenoids and lifters replaced in December. Total cost $2.5k by ordering mopar parts online rather than the stealership charging $12k for a new engine.

I’m currently running Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 and Mopar oil filter. Would 0w40 benefit in any way? Or, should I stick with 5w30 going forward?
Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w30 (y)

I would say it is very little to none that do extended intervals like that. Just about all the Pentastar cam and follower problems I have seen on the Gladiator and Wrangler forums I frequent will fall in one of three groups. Those that follow the OLM, 5K miles and 3K miles.

There has been no discernable oil or oil change regime that has been proven to mitigate any of the issues.

Even at single percentage points it’s enough to keep every shop in the US familiar with the issue. But it’s still very few at the consumer level.
Just about every person I know with one has had to do a full camshaft job. Hell, my 2016 Wrangler has had the drivers done twice and the passenger once. And my 14 Jeep Grand cherokee has had it done once. That's 3 jobs in ONE house hold and I change my oil religiously.
