will a nice 10-40 be fine or will the new euro 5-40 work?

Have you considered Mobil's 0W-40 that is available at Walmart for $22.47 in a 5-quart jug?

What are your driving habits and what has the pattern of maintenance been on the vehicle?

Completly rebuilt motor top end and bottom end. Will use to commute on the freeway about 50 miles a day.
0-40 im not sure if this car has been back speced to use 0-40

A 5w40 and 10w40 are roughly the same viscosity once warmed up. I would think that any modern 5w40 would work well in that motor; Rotella T6 5w40 will be a bit on the heavier side for a 5w40 (HTHS = 4.2) which puts it in line with many 10w40s.

Otherwise there is always Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w40.

Yes I think you could use M1 0W-40 with confidence and I think it has been back spec'd to your MY BMW.
It's been back spec'd to my '86 Porsche and even older models.
