I've posted a couple times before, but still unsure on what to do since I've heard so many different options. I'm most likely gonna change the oil this weekend. I have a 2007 Toyota Yaris with the 1.5L engine, about 89k miles. I drive maybe 6-7k tops per year. 95% of all my trips are around the city
Currently, I have Maxlife in my car, but have read that its not great for longer oci's. I would like to try and run an oil and just do an oil change once per year without worry or a UOA.

At my local Walmart, they have PP, PU, and some other Pennzoil products, but sorta disappointed that they didn't have QSUD. I've also heard Mobil products seem to love Toyota engines, but haven't seen any standout UOA's lately from them.. Thanks

This is the engine that was back spec'd for 5w20, so I was considering either 0/5w20 since winter months will be here before I know it.

Yep.

Short trips less than 6 miles are hard on oil. Either change every 6 months or drive a 20-30 minute drive once a week to get the oil hot. If you go a year on oil with 6k of less than 5 mile trips , the fuel dilution will be high.

Anything 7500 or less, PP/PU will b fine. I agree with 5-20 recommendation. Pair it with a Toyota oem filters or P1 filters. Personally I would get a couple of jugs of valvoline next-gen free after rebate with a purolator classic or cq red filter and change oil in spring and fall.

+1 on the fuel dilution. Use a decent dino oil and change it 2X a year. Maybe PYB.

The best synthetic is not going to help much with fuel dilution.

Or try PP and do a UOA at 3000 miles (mid year) without changing the oil and see where the fuel dilution is along with oxidation and nitration. If its good then go the full year and continue same deal in future years. No need for more than one UOA.

Go to Wal Mart, buy the Quaker State Ultimate Durability, its a full synthetic 5W20 for around $20.00 bucks in a 5 qt jug. You can't beat that.

Yea you can. In his situation, 1 jug of VWB Nextgen will be 0.00 after rebate. He will spend at the most 5 bucks on a filter. Twice a year. So his Oil change will cost him :

(0.00 + 5) X 2 = 10.00

Quaker State is 20.00 USD at walmart. He will change his oil once a year( or try to ) , but since he is going a longer distance, he is going to have to invest in a more expensive long drain filter i.e. Bosch D+ , M1 , K/N , Fram TG , Purolator Synthetic . Most if not all of those are usually 8 USD or more.

So ( 20.00 + 8 ) X 1 = 28.00

10 < 28.00

6-7k miles trips in summer pose no problem at all.
And even in winter, fuel dilution is well controlled with modern FI systems.

But at 6-7k a year, you are stretching the limits of most dinos IMO. So get a nice full synthetic and get it over with.
