Saw a 'deal' on Mobil 1 5W-20 @ PartSource yesterday - the standard sale pack of a 4.4 litre jug with a 1 litre bottle plastic wrapped to it. In the past these were c. $28, and more recently $32. Yesterday they were $65.99. Oh yeah, and then add 13% sales tax. This was not AFE or EP or an exotic weight - just plain old M1. Yikes!

We just paid $22.88 for Mobil 1 5w30 Plus it has a $12.00 rebate that is a great deal for top quality oil.. We bought 6 5 quart bottles two for me two for my brother and two for my son..There are two rebates per household but we all live in different places.. Im going back for 2 more for my daughter truck if the rebate is still on.
I may be switching over to Mobil 1 for all our synthetic oils..
My brothers new shop will be stocking Mobil 1 as their only synthetic oil also..

I mostly get my oil down south in America

65.99 sounds like full price though..CT always has oil on sale though, walmart has Pennz Plat and or M1 for 28.88 quite often also. CT has castrol for 32-35$.

Holy guacamole!! Sounds like you'd be better off getting some Amsoil or Schaeffer through the mail!

I think Canadian and Australian dollars are very close at the moment, but 5 litres of Mobil 1 is more like $90 here, so you're not doing too badly mate!

Just wait for the sales and then stock up.

Why are you shopping at ParttsSource? You may as well shop at Canadian Tire, they are the same company and CT typically has better sale prices.

Canada is like the US, every second shade tree mechanic is an Amsol dealer, plus you can find it at retailers.

Which is a good thing, because ordering anything from the US "through the mail" is hideously expensive. USPO "flat rate box" to Canada is $US50, plus Canada Post's $C 8.00 brokerage fee.

If you think UPS or FedEx is cheaper, think again. Slightly lower shipping cost (maybe $US 35), but add $50 for brokerage and other fees when they show up at your door (including a fee for collecting the fees). There is no way you can save money, even if the oil was free, by buying from a US vendor.

Now, if you bought it from China, whose government subsidizes all foreign postal costs, you could get it delivered for $10, and there will be no brokerage fees, because every single shipment I've ever received from China (and that would be nearing 100, since I do a lot of electronics work), regardless of how legitimate the vendor might be, and without prompting on your part, will declare the item a "Gift" and lie about the value. Every. Single. One.

It's actually a problem, although it's never happened to me, but since items below $20 are exempt and carry no additional costs, lying on the customs declaration could result in seizure of the item. But even if you ask, they will ignore you and lie on the form. 100% of the time, Guaranteed.

Not To make you feel bad, but I just bought my 5qt big jug O' Castrol Edge EP gold bottle for 25 USD on sale at wally world. And Most M1 flavours were 22 USD.

Screaming deal imo.

TGMO is overhyped, see detailed tests here: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubb...ll_#Post4173532

13-14% NOACK, 8 TBN, over 6400 cp @ -35c which is out of spec for a 0w oil (6200 max). The only benefit this oil has is the high VI which offers slightly better mpg for short trips.

M1 0w20 is under 10% NOACK, 9.2 TBN, 4100 cp @ -35c and goes on sale for ~$30 per 4.4L jug which is only $1/L more than TGMO.

IMO, most OEM branded oils are worse than top end retail shelf synthetics.

Partsource and Canadian Tire have never been destinations to buy motor oil at regular price. Partsource is having their 20 year celebration - 20 continuous years of hosing their customers.

Generally the high prices in Europe are do to VAT or something similar. If you mail order something and it has value or cost in excess of $20USD, they will hit it with tariffs and taxes before they'll hand it over.

Very bad system to promote economic growth, but it does pay for social benny's like time off between jobs and such ...

Dunno if Canada is doing the same sort of thing ??

The REAL reason VAT is used, is because it's VERY effective to determine taxes needed to be paid:

for example:

You have a business selling oil.

The oil you buy from whiolesale or manufacturer, you pay $1 per quart + 20% VAT. You can however reclaim the VAT as you're not the enduser, so you would, no? When you sell the oil, you do so for *2 per quart + 20% VAT. The vat, paid for by the customer has to be paid quarterly. They already know how much VAT you reclaimed and for what items, so you can't pocket it or lie. Incoming - outgoing = inventory. Anything missing in the inventory is considered sold and you need to pay the VAT (even if it was shoplifted).

But now they also know how much you made, and can be taxed accordingly.

Of course, the VAT in itself is nice for the state to have, but the taxes on profit are higher than the VAT.

Our GST and exchange do not justify the prices we see. Otherwise, Imperial Oil would be unable to sell me Delvac 1 for about $25 a jug every day of the week.

I was in PartSource for something else and noticed the oil - fortunately I still have a couple of jugs left. The same package was on sale @ Canadian Tire today for $39.99. Still way above the old sale prices, but not too bad. The higher-end Mobil 1 4.4 l jugs (e.g. 0W-20 & 0W-30) are $51.99 @ CT, and around $49.99 @ WM. They never seem to go on sale.

Yep, I paid the same, I came in to post that such deals are available from time to time. Yet, some places still jack up prices, particularly of certain types of oil, during rebate season, it seems...

I am waiting for another Pennzoil Platinum rebate, and hoping I catch it in time to get a good price on the HM. $38 for 25 quarts was not bad for the regular stuff...
