In 1985, I brought a new Ford Tempo. Since money was
tight for me back than, I used Shop Rite brand
10W-30 oil (Shop Rite is a grocery store chain)
for most of the life on the car. I got 192,000 miles
out of that car with NO engines/transmission problems at ALL! Nothing! And this was some no name
gorcery store oil!!

Ya know, doesnt that just go to show you that this
oil debate about one oil being so much better than
another oil is just plain silly??!!

The API and marketers of cheaper oils would love for you to continue to believe that.

Anecdotal evidence is not the great solve-end-all reason to come to a conclusion.
It is good that this worked for you, however, statistical evidence can determine how typical something is.

Good Day,
Steven

You obviously haven't spent time reading older posts discussing that exact same topic. Please read some and then see if you feel the same. If you don't, then I don't think this forum would be for you.

Looks like you used the same argument for the car choice, a car is a car is a car.

If that is working for you, who am I to say any different.

With cheaper oil the key is frequent changes (3,000 miles at MOST). My grandpa ran a Mercury van 350,000 miles on "the cheapest stuff he could find" but he always changed the oil before 3,000 miles. But he uses Synthetic in his Crownvic for less than 5,000 miles

.

The thing that higher quality oil can do is go serious longer while keeping the engine cleaner/better lubricated. As others said - check out the UOA threads and various other threads. There is proof for this. There is a difference.

.....I agree any "qaulity, correctly made/labeled oil" no matter the name will run fine now days to 5K OCI.

Any extra testing/additives are not really needed for normal joes.

But some guys want the extra Percent mileage or wear protection or peace of mind and take things
way out as far as OCI,UOA etc its not needed but no harm either.

Grocery Store bought is OK if latest rating does not matter the name this is not what everyone on this site wants to know or acknowledge but it true.

To add I have 200K on bronco 5.8 valve covers off only for blown head gaskey and sludge/gunk only as film and I run ANY type/grade of oil being made at any given time from blend plant with OCI of 10k to?? when I think of it.

If I used some high dollar oil or did a 5K OCI would my bronco be in better shape? do not know or care it runs fine and pass's smog so how much better? I have a life and stressing over a few ppm wear metals or TBN is time I do not have to waste it is a no brainer.

Flame suit on with a cold beer so go at it.

Dude,

Did you ever stop to think how many more miles you could have gotten out of that car if you had used decent oil?

I agree with bruce for the most part. You just need to match the correct oil with the engine/driving conditions/weather. If it meets the API spec, your fine. The API is a good think IMO. Most people will not keep a car long enough to even notice the small differences.

My first beer in two weeks! I agree with Bruce. I still like all the pretty colors and marketing stuff and studying the intricate differnces and similarities is a good way to pass time when I have nothing better to do.

Cry me a river if this doesn't fall into commercialized norms.

I usually just use the cheapest oil that meets the specs and is of an appropriate grade, provided I trust the name on the bottle. I do know a lot of people who have put a lot of miles on vehicles using "whatever" for oil, with no oil-related engine failures.

What would be API's motive for that?

What would be API's motive for that?

I think he means: API (American Petroleum Institute)those who are involved in bringing it to the market,
marketers sell to the consumer in the market.

I went to Princeton High School. How are things over there?

Anyway, preventative maintenance and following manufacturer guidelines for fluid change intervals definitely outweigh the differences between oils in most cases, so you have a good point.

That's a silly statement, everybody on this forum knows that Torco SR-1 5w-20 is the bestest oil ever.

well i agree to a certain point. However the engines in those tempos i think were the 2.3 right? that engine has been around forever and is pretty much bullet proof.... so that doesnt really mean anything to me. However getting that many miles out of the trans is pretty impressive. did you use the same brand trans fluid? do you drive really slow? those autos were not that strong.
