A)Is Pennzoil Platinum European 5w-40 real or myth?

Several conversations with Pennzoil and Shell help desks revealed that they knew nothing of this oil or where to get it.
One individual from Shell desk was somewhat helpful, but shortly into the conversation I realized any info from these folks is tainted as they are really just Public Relations people reading from scripts and only ad-libbing between corp orately approved boundaries.
Here are the three most telling highlights:
1. Resolutely refutes that PPEuropean is a "re packaging" of Helix Ultra or similar variants.
2. Swears PPEuropean does still have "adaptive molecules"
3. Neither Shell/Pennzoil/QuakerState distributors for Baltimore,MD or Washington, DC had even heard of PPEuropean or how to get it.
4. Was told that it was available at Jiffy Lube, but found that JiffyLube used QuakerState European blend, NOT PPEuropean for German cars.
5. I was told Pennzoil generally was generally designed to be more heat resistant and Quaker State was generally designed for more horsepower...
6. NAPA, Autozone, Advanced, PepBoys, Walmart were all ignorant to PPEuro or how to get it.

B) Amsoil 5w-40 European looks like a great oil, and I'd consider buying it, but why do they make it so hard?

There could be an agent/dealer/distributor living right next door to me but since Amsoil refuses to post a comprehensive listing of representatives there's no way I'd ever know! Agents/dealers are left to fight among themselves for visibility. It is as if Amsoil is content to collect the temporary sign-up fee from individuals pay to get a discount and not really work to build a stable and visible distribution network. I've purchased Amsoil off and on over the last 20 years and it's no better today. A rag-tag collection of farmers, retiree's and auto enthusiasts scattered about overlapping and not really advancing at all.
More like running on a treadmill - always there, moving and selling but not any real advancement.
Thank goodness they keep the product up. It's like everyone involved is happy with the $$ the money they are making and don't want to re-invest in sales or marketing as if they are tainted practices.

You can get this at

I bought some a few weeks ago and I can assure you its real. Actually poured 5 qts. into my '06 VW GTI!

I've been using it. I can find it at only one place locally, and not at any chain store like Kragen or PepBoys. My guess would be it's a hard to find oil pretty much everywhere.

Johnny has said that the Pennzoil and QS European Formula in 5w30 is simply Helix Ultra 5w30. I don't remember what or if he said what the 5w40 was.

Thanks for the responses. I'm glad to know PPEuro exists!
I do appreciate all the trials, research, reports and postings you all do - VERY helpful for those of us that just like to take care of their cars and make good decisions.

So far I've got my hands on one of your "wonder oils" (German Castrol 0-30 Syntech)at $8p/qt. for a case when on a business trip to Toronto.
I guess I'll just have to keep my eye's open if I hope to try PPEuro. Actually, though, I haven't heard if you all have given PPEuro the same blessing as the original PP?
Amsoil 5w-40 will have to wait considering $7.50 p/qt. plus shipping or 80 mile round trip.
Trying to find these BITOG super oils is hard/expensive work if you don't live in the right place, although a top 10 US city should be as good as it gets?!@
This time around I ended up with a case of Mobil 1 0w-40Euro locally on sale at PepBoys for $4.69 p/qt.
Considering it is still VW approved and more than 2 of you actually deem it acceptable, I'm happy.
Beginning to lose interest in chasing the world over for the perfect oil when I'm looking at 4-5K OCI's.
Did my AutoRX, plan to do FP60 if it is in stock...
Thanks again.
BTW- My car always seems to run a little better/quieter for a week or two after oil change - even at 3-4K intervals. Normal or just in my mind?

Get M1 5w-40 at Wal Mart for around $5.25 a quart and you'll be good. It's on Audi's approved list and it's probably the best oil Mobil makes.
