Just got a 89 Toyota corolla station wagon 189,000 miles on it and it runs fine.
Any recommendations on what weight I should use? Mostly city driving maybe some highway but not a lot. Used to be my father in laws great running little car.
Oh its a 4 cylinder carburetor no FI

Thanx

Stay with a top quality dino oil like Pennzoil Yellow Bottle, Mobil Clean 5000 or Havoline DS.

Change out the cheap, little, but important PCV Valve while you're at it...

Guys,

It can run "fine" and be sludged up or be worn, so that's a reaspon to keep using a low additive oil if that's what's been done?? not!

OP: Stick with the top oils & filters.

Its been using PYB for the last 7 years or so, could I use HDEO in 15-40?

My '91 Toyota gets QS 10w30 (this change - always 10w30 but I use what's on sale). The previous owner used 10w40 but I always say as thin as possible but as thick as necessary

How many miles on the motor???

The odometer reads 164,216 but it doesn't work - and I couldn't begin to guess when it quit working haha.

The previous owner told me the cluster isn't the original and the motor has 86k, but you know how things like that go. I will say it RUNS like it has under 100k.

Keep running a 5W30 or 10W30 , the PYB it's been running on is fine . It's an OHC engine , you want to get that oil moving ASAP on cold start up .

Had a 1991 Corolla SR-5 coupe from about 70k miles to 140k miles.

Ran pretty well nothing but PYB 5W-30 at 4-6k intervals.

Used barely any oil, and ran like a top. Selling it was the dumbest thing I think I've ever done!

Dean,

I to suggest you use a 5W-30 oil as a standard for that Corolla. I have basically the same driving habit you have now but when I had my 89 Camry I used Moobil 1 5W-30 until I decided to get rid of it at the 250K mark. The Corolla is a fine car to use in town cuz Corolla are not known for there gas mileage at all. That's why I went from 10W-30 oil to a 5W-30 to try and gain some MPG. Good luck
