Oil Filters, Tale of Woe

Yesterday while backing out of my garage with the Suzuki it blew at least a quart of Maxlife 5w-30 all over the driveway. Used a Purolator 14610 at the most recent OC maybe 250 miles ago. Filter seemed tight so I replaced it with a identical filter and parked it. The filter looked fine, not double gasketed. Cleaned up the oleaginous mess with kitty litter. At least the car had enough respect not to let me drive away before it had a malfunction. Not trusting the new filter I replaced it today with a ST4967. It does not leak. Checked my oil filter shelf for more defective items and found a recently purchased Bosch filter for my Ford. It has a large bolus of hard dark brown material on the inside (return tube) of the filter. I suspose this is excess glue from the end cap and filter element. Last year I had a Motorcraft FL500S develop a leak on the Ford. Replaced it with a WIX. Think I will shift completely to ST filters. The rest are hugely disappointing. What is happening to OF quality?

Maybe I will buy a Tesla. They are made in the US and I'm told they don't need oil filters.

Microgard Select from Orileys (Premium Guard) is highly regarded in this forum. That is the direction I went after the Motorcraft glue fiasco.

Lucky it didn't happen while out on the road driving.

I bought some a while back when they were super cheap on Amazon and cut them open. They were a mix US made filters with excesses of black glue, Asian ones that looked ok construction wise, and one that had a rubber bypass that was sealed tight.

I’d rather get an orange can Fram for an extra dollar.

I'm confused, you eventually replaced a 14610 with a 4967? The 14610/(7317) is metric thread filter, the (ST) 4967 SAE thread. Fwiw, I've used many many US made Puro 14610 application filters over the years, never once had a sealing gasket issue. That Includes many US made Bosch Prem 3323 (all c&p) and the pictured TL 14610 tech filter I recently posted HERE.

Yeah, something is not right here. I don't know what Suzuki he has and what kind of oil filter it takes, but these 2 filters don't have the same thread. Either the puro is the wrong thread and it was just cranked on there, but it worked itself loose, or ???

Yeah, something is not right here........
Yep, 'based on the information provided', reads like installer error. 'If' as stated the ST 4967 is not leaking now, 'then' seems that is the correct application. If so the 14610/(7317) would not be and no surprise it leaked. More surprised it screwed on. The 4967 Puro equivalent is the 14476, alternatively the slightly longer 14477(4386) an option if space permits

See this from May.
Correct filter for this car is 3/4-16 - he used two in a row according to this post that have M20 threads!

Stupid question, did the 14610 spin on easily ? Or was it giving you resistance when you were installing it ? If none of the above, did you smear some oil on the gasket and go 1/4 turn past hand tight ? If none of the above, sounds like you just got a faulty filter. Poor QC on Purolator's end. I must say, I have never encountered a similiar problem in the thousands of OC's I did over the years. I did do a double gasket " DUH" 2X though. What a mess :(

Wow, so the incorrect (non spec) filter application also with incorrect thread pitch has be used often. Again, not surprised it leaked, more surprised it didn't happen sooner. As noted, then correct/spec Puro filter the 14476. Thanks for added info, explains much.

You were correct and I thank you for catching my error.

I was mistaken with the filter #. The filter which leaked was indeed a TL14476 (checked it from a very stinky garbage can). My Mitsubishi takes the TL14610. I bought the shorter version TL 14476 because that was offered on Amazon at the time. It did spin on w/o any resistance. I am confident now that I have a non-leaking OF.

Just looked up the thread specs, and it says the TL14476 has 3/4-16 threads and the TL14610 has 20X1.5 MM threads. The ST4967 also has a 3/4-16 thread.

What about the link posted above by @drtyler showing (out) use of the Bosch 3323 in addition to equivalent (in) the TL14610 on the 2012 Suzuki? That was really for a Mitsubishi?
