Oil/Filter recommendation.

My friend just did. I checked the oil and it turn out to be very, very dirty, a little sludge at the tip. I can feel the wear metals when I rub the oil between my fingers...

I figured the 0w-40 would be the best oil for the application. It's doubtful we are going to go to the MB dealer for the filter.

Mann HU718/5X is the fleece filter for '99 SL500, it's the same filter for many E class. Rockauto has it for $8.xx, it's $10.xx at Amazon, my local dealer's price is $24.99.

If he wants to change oil+filter himself, he should invest in a fluid extractor and a filter end cap then he can do it in less than 30 minutes without jack up the car.

A car that old without warranty and extreme wear metals, I would go t6 to stay syn but cut cost. 40 bucks as an everyday price as compared to 65 for the m1.

I'd definitely go with M1 0w-40 or Amsoil Euro. OEM/M1/Amsoil filter.

^^

Someone had to say it.

If it is only due to some sludge or something, maybe run a couple very short OCIs of 15w40 conventional, and then go to something more appropriate thereafter.

Mobil 1 0w40, or 5w40 either way.

The M113 is a very robust V8. Have the plugs been done?

I always buy my filters from the dealer because they have a good parts department and their prices are often the same as online with filters and such.

Don't need to buy it from the dealer. There are many online sources out there, as mentioned before.

Thanks guys for the input.

I wouldn't know how to tell, but the engine runs strong.
