I have a 2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i and I'm going to change my oil filter along with my first oil change. At my local store my options for oil filters are:

STP oil filter
Bosch oil filter
Mobil oil filter
K&N oil filter w/o wrench off nut
K&N oil filter w/ wrench off nut

Of all of those which would you choose? I'm going to change the filter probably along with every oil change, every 4-5000 miles.

Edit: If you'd like to inspect them > http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/2012-Subaru-Impreza-AWD/Oil-Filter/_/N-k5pjhZajdeo (select the only engine option available (duh))

They are all made by Champion Labs. The STP is an E-Core with cardboard endcaps. The others have metal endcaps, with the Mobil 1 having better media.

Grant11, wouldn't make an iota of a difference which filter option you go with for a 5K mile OCI. I would say since 2.0i is a Turbo engine, go with K&N Pro-series (w/o wrench), but STP would just serve fine as well.

My vote is Bosch. I think it's basically a PureOne without the sandpaper coating

Mobil 1 and K&N are great filters, but a waste of money for a 5000-mile OCI

Most any filter can do 4-5k oci, so no need for high end.

Mobil M1, K&N with nut is overkill.

STP doesn't look to be an ecore in your application so it should be ok. Don't know much about the new K&N series, but based on spec sheet it looks fine.

Bosch Premium is a good filter, made by Purolator, but a bit pricey at ~$7 for your oci, but the best of the three imo.

Presumably there’s additional choices on the Net. But if you want to limit yourself to these choices (certainly reasonable if you simply want to buy at a local parts shop), I’d say…

-STP: Not bad filters, but they are nonetheless what I’ll call “value filters,” and therefore not high-end construction. At least their air filters are flimsier than other brands, from my experience. Pass.
-Mobil, K&N: Certainly good stuff. But I assume these are still both pricey . Pass.
-Bosch: Reasonable price, good quality. Buy.

Last time I checked, Ecores have a fiber endcap, like a tough fabric, not cardboard.
