Bought a Mustang GT 98 2 week ago, finally weekend and have time doing oil change, First oil change always a nervous for me. The drain plug came out easy, and the oil pan thread is perfect. Now come to the filter. I first use the cup type, it fix perfectly, but it wont turn, I back out a little bit and try again and again, finally it strip.

second try I use the Clamp type , it bent up the filter, so I like WTH, I keep going at it. it wont move . then the clamp went in too far, it poke a hole. at the point, I stick in a long screw drive in and it still wont move.

My last tool is the 3 claw spint type. But its in my brother house, 25 min away, I drove there and brought back the tool, put the claw on the filter and after a while try find a grip and fighting with it, its finally turn, but I use every strenght i got to spint it loose

the IDIOT install the filter, must not apply any oil on the gasket, and tight down with 100ft of torque

, the gasket on the old filter was so push in, its so thin , that how I know who ever install the filter , must use the tool to tight it. also I can tell my the damage on the filter base.

this champ must be an ecore version, cause I saw the plastic cage, like the ecore ac delco back then.

replace it with FL820S ( oil on gasket

) and its feel like home. Car start up with zero noise and engine is smooth like before lol.

I change countless oil filter and never in my life encounter this situation, never have to use the 3 claw type before on any oil filter. This is the first.

I had a similar situation to my 2010 Cub Cadet LTX 1040 mower with the Kohler engine. I racked up the first 50 hours on it and it was time to do an oil change.

Went to go loosen the filter by hand and nothing. Whatever so I went to lowes and bought a smaller filter ratchet with the metal strap/band. Again nothing. WTH?! I tried wrapping rubber vacuum hose line around it and tightening it as much as I could and then try twisting it off. This sucker was on there.

Tried filter pliers, I personally do not like these tools the most out of the other filter tools. Sure enough it punched a hole through the can just like yours.

Ok, last ditch effor. I stab the filter with a screwdriver and still nothing. Ended up tearing the filter. Now all that is left is just the baseplate. Nothing else. I tried getting a small flat head screwdriver into the holes and using a mallet to bang on the screwdriver to get the filter to move, nothing.

At this point I am seriously P.O. Someone told me about oil filter vise grips. I went to harbor freight and bought their vice grips and went home. Had it so that it would only lock when I squeezed the handles with all my might. Took a deep breath and turned it came off. I don't know who worked at the assembly plant but I figured King Kong or Superman tightened that filter. Take it off and the gasket was dry... HMMMMMMMM

What a rough experience haha

Best thing I've used are channel locks. The more force you use to turn the filter, the tighter they clamp down. They work like a pipe wrench.

+1; I got sucked into one of these issues on a 1.5L Mazda where the filter is on the backside of the engine. Big Suck for sure.

Why are you using 5w30? lol

I will get this tool too. Since what just happen, I want every tool as possible to remove the oil filter lol.

Have had this happen 3 times,it sux.
First time used screw driver method
Second time used metal band filter wrench, added a piece of old serpentine belt to inside of metal band to get grip and that really helps.-crushed can to heck.
Third time on a hydraulic filter used the bmf channel locks.

glad you got it off metalslug, it can really stess a person!

Have had it happen a few times over the years. It's definitely a PITA, and it makes a mess too.

These filters that are stuck like this can cause the adapter gasket to leak because of all the force needed to take off the oil filter, so keep an eye out for leaks. Some oil filter adapter gaskets can be a PITA to fix. A 94 Jeep Cherokee with the 4.0 is one. There are long threads on various forums on how to take that adapter off.

Huh! You think THAT was a nightmare!

I knew a couple of elderly bachelor brothers who shared a Chevy Sprint. They tried the stab-it-with-a-large-screwdriver technique to loosen the oil filter. When the hammer hit the screwdriver, the tip of the screwdriver slipped off the filter and instead hit the engine block nearby---in a spot that happened to be an oil passage cast into the block.

Bye, bye, Sprint.

The other kicker is access.

Sometimes a hard-to-remove filter would have come off if you (we) could have gotten a good square shot at turning it.

I use my old metal strap wrench on my Volvo (5 cyl. "white engine" with filter nestled 3/4 the way in the pan). It gives me a clean, easy 1/5 turn but it always works because it's "square on".

ps Glad you got it off. Remember, the gasket isn't magically glued to the can so that couldn't have been the problem. It was severely OVERTIGHTENED by someone malicious.
This happens in tire shops all the time.

Don't get me started on these willfully destructive, mean, cowardly people. They do it because they think no one will ever catch them.

You know they know better.

Well done. I really hate how tightly some people put their oil filters on! Only hand tighten....

+1 I have a Giant pair of channel locks with solid grip and plenty of leverage.

This happened to me the first and LAST time the wife went to a jiffy lube probably more than 20 years ago. It was a dodge charger and I had to unbolt the filter mount from the car to get it off using a vice. I made the wife watch me fix it to unlearn the notion of jiffy convenience.

Why not? That's what Ford spec'd for it when new.

My brother has the same car, I asked him this same question a couple years back, knowing that Ford had back-spec'd "everything" to 5w20.

Turns out there were a few they didn't. And this was one of them.

Happened to me on the first change on my wife's Acadia. Very tight quarters. I was a bloody mess by the time I got it off. So unnecessary. You have to reach this filter from the top.
