Oil Extracator Versus conventional drain method.

Well, if you have to get under the car to change the oil filter - you may as well pull the drain plug, too. Come on guys, we're oil men not sissys - get under there and get dirty! Actually, with rubber gloves you don't get that dirty anyhow. I think that warm gushing oil out the drain plug will flush more insolubles and dirt out than trying to suck it up with an extractor.
 
Why not try both methods and see if one leaves more oil behind than the other?

Exactly. In my 530i I can get as much oil via extractor as I can via the drain plug.

kcryan, you're lucky your BMW still has a dipstick. In some of its newest engines BMW has eliminated it, so there goes the oil extractor idea.

I had to Google that one, not being much of a BMW follower. The thing that surprised me was how many people out there defended it!

Said by someone who has not wrestled with the unique VAG belly-pan fasteners while flat on your back with zero clearance in the cold.
 
I hate to say it but I was pushed into trying an extractor and no it's the only way I do my oil changes on several vehicles.

After I drain the oil using the drain plug in my BMW 330ci , I can pull out another 1/4 qt with the oil extractor through the dipstick tube. In this case, the extractor (just like they use at the dealership - BMW & Mercedes) works better than drain plug.

On my wife's Acura, after I have sucked the oil out with the extractor, if I open the drain plug I can only get about 3 more tablespoons to drain out. I'm not worried about that much left in the sump.

In these cars jacking the car up and draining through the drain plug adds very little to no value to me.

I wish my Chevy truck worked with the extractor but it doesn't. I can only pull half of the sump out. Same thing on the transmission. GM puts some kind of baffle in that prevents oil extractors from working. Next time I have the trans pan off, I'm going to correct that. Anyhow, for that vehicle I have a Fram Suredrain.
