Oil cooler and Gauges on JD Z320m

I took what I had off. The little cooler I got I think I'm going to mount directly above the oil cooler. Cutting a hole in the engine cover and mounting it on there. I think you can find kits for this, Briggs Vangaurd motors on eBay for small money.

In fact I think I'm going to order one. I don't think the adaptor fits but I don't need that.

Yes, that looks good, Shoz. It doesn't have the correct oil filter adapter though, I would have to find that item. I sent Briggs a message of f.b. If they come back with anything different, I will post in this thread.

I see your above kit at Walmart website w/o filter for 22.58. Price is good! I think I would change out those clamps to a worm gear style, just in case.

It looks like that engine air inlet cover just has holes drilled in it for the airflow...

I also found this type of bolt on cooler.. it goes around the oil filter itself. This is an "easy install". Do you think it would actually do any good? I guess it is better than nothing though.

The efficiency of a heatsink without air movement is little to none.

Think of the radiator on a vehicle and no fan to pull air across it.

I would say this is worthless.

Kawasaki makes a bolt on heat sink type cooler for their bigger motors. Fits before the oil filter. There is a lot of air moving around there due to the hydro fans.

Here's a pic and part number.

That is a much beefier unit of cast aluminum, also appears that oil flow fills at least some of the cavity. And yes, if there is decent airflow from the hydro fans then it will provide cooling to the oil.

How much... /shrug

One would need to temp check the oil before and after to determine that answer.

Any added surface area WILL aid cooling. Even with a cooler the fined oil filter thing would be a good addition IMHO.

But with any oil cooler question you first need to know how hot is my oil? And a surface IR reading is at best is lower than what the pistons see.

I would think the IR gun could show the difference between the bare filter and one with the cooling fins with the fins showing a lower temp.

If someone wants to buy it for $21 and test the temps before/after, more power to them, I'd be interested to see the results.

Better lay down the test parameters first. And what you find acceptable.

As I am not performing the test, why would I define the testing criteria and the "acceptable" results?

I'm not sure what your getting at here, if you want to run either cooler that is your prerogative. I stated that if someone wants to buy it and list the temp change results, if any, I would be interest in seeing that. Regardless, I wont be using that result to change anything I do with my equipment.

Got to have acceptable parameters from both sides. Number one is accurate oil temp testing.

I just measured my 3614, I have a little under 2" of filter body b4 I get to the textured "grip" material. The 100mm would be too long. Th 80 mm would extend the whole filter basically. I don't know if the grip material would hurt the cooling process as it might act as an insulation? The 66 mm might be best then for the 3614, but having more cooling area might be better over all. Maybe the next filter I get should not have that grip material on it. What do you think?

Also on my mower, there is a shroud right near the filter I would have to trim some to fit this on. For 10 bucks, it might be worth a shot for the 80mm unit. I have an IR gun I can test it with. I would get the black one also, if you think it will work better.

That is an oil heater.

The air blows OUT across the oil cooler in this design.

That looks pretty close to the oil cooler on my B&S commercial turf engine, it blows air OUT across the cooler.

OK, just mowed for about 1 1/2 hours. Once done, the temp at the back top of the oil filter (near the grip stuff) was 225 degrees. As I suspected, the grip stuff temp was a little lower at 215 degrees. Closer to the engine was also about 215 degrees. This will be my baseline info so now I don't have to remember!
