In my observation, it seems many of the Euro's have been ahead of the curve on using 'cartridge' style filters. So, the aftermarket has been playing catch up somewhat with that market. That being the case sticking with oem was/is the most expedient and perhaps least expensive way to go.
With the increase in factory cartridge use, the aftermarket is gradually catching up. Still cartridges are a smaller percentage of market than spin on, so economies of scale are still a factor.
As personal anecdote, I'm able to get Napa Gold cartridges for Hyun/Kia applications for half the cost or less (on 40% off sale) of the Mahle made(in S Korea) oem. And the quality is equivalent to the OEM, very high.
