New VS Rebuilt Alternator

Never run the vehicle on open circuit (battery terminal disconnected) as this will do serious damage to the alternator.

In the absence of an oscilloscope, connect a multimeter across the battery terminals using the AC voltage range and not the DC range.

Start the engine with the headlights on and note the reading on the multimeter. If the meter reads above .5 volts/ 500mV the alternator is faulty.
