OEM filter ?

Car is a 1991 Lincoln Town Car, 4.6, 160K for mileage. I have been using Amsoil 0W-20 with a Ea011 filter. I was getting a “ticking” upon cold start up (over night) until the car warmed up. It sounded like a lifter tick, but would go away as soon as the temp gauge hit “N” on Normal. I just did an oil change, using Amsoil 0W-20 but instead used a Motorcraft FL-820s filter. The start up tick is gone.

I put approximately 10K per year on this car and do a OC one a year. My question is, Can I use this filter (MC FL-820s) for 10K or should I change it at 5K ,add any make up oil and do a “full change” at 10K?

That OEM filter can easily do 10,000 miles. Do not let the Amsoil cult know you are not useing a Ea011 filter or you will be kicked out of the Church of Extended oil changes!!!LOL

Puralator used to make Motorcraft filters and they where a combo of Puralators designs taking a little from the Pure One and a little from the standard line! I am sure they probably do not filter down as fine as the Amsoil filter but if they work in your application that is all that really matters. The only reason you would need to change it out every six months would be if insolubles where getting too high or you had a mechanical failure of the filter.Their should not be that much inside your engine for that filter to catch if it has been maintained and ran on synthetic.

lincolnjohnny, the MC FL-820S is arguably the best choice for the 4.6L modular motor and will certainly go 10,000 miles, but if you plan on pushing it much further, I would have a used oil analysis done.

BTW, where in MA are you? I'm on the Cape...

RF Overlord : I'm from the Springfield area. I'll probably change the filter at 5K ( just to be on the safe side).
