Am running a 2008 kia sorento 3.8 v6, 150,000 kms.
Having oil changed Friday using Amsoil Signature series 5W30.
Do have some piston slap until engine warms up.
Also have a loud "tick" that to me sounds similar to a solid lifter that needs regapping. The reason I used 5W30 rather than 5W20 in the Winter here in Southern Ontario because the "tick" is quieter using 30 weight oils.
My question is, what oil filter do you recommend? I usually use Kia branded cartridge filter.
Thank you for any suggestions, and comments.

There are many brands under the Premium Guard umbrella. Carquest Premium Guard at Advance Auto Parts, EcoGard.

Does it burn any oil? Consider possibly Valvoline Restore and Protect to clean rings out if carboned up. Discussion on another thread regarding can it help piston slap? I used HPL Engine Cleaner 30 in my son’s 4cyl Kia Forte. His motor was clean that we could tell but I got a lot of carbon from somewhere that was in filter. Just after that his piston slap was significantly reduced enough that my wife commented. All I can guess is the piston/rings weren’t jammed some and cleaning allowed easier centered movement. I may way off but it worked and has stayed at that quieter level. He is now running Valvoline Restore and Protect but only first run. Valvoline Restore and Protect wasn’t out yet when we did the HPL Engine Cleaner 30.

His didn’t burn any oil prior and isn’t really now either. I think we wipe more from dipstick than it may lose as we check at each fill up anyway. Old school habits die hard.

Just to add with oil choices. I have no issues with Amsoil, HPL or other boutique oils except cost. Even that can be justified if extended drains are involved or you just want some potentially higher quality oils. If you are a user that does 5k or less then it may not benefit. If you want the better and have the $$ then rock on.

I myself just bought over $400 worth of HPL transmission fluid as I want what I consider to be the best quality option to protect it. Working on drain and fills this week. For motor oil I use off the shelf from Walmart and change at 5k OCI based on my particular use, short trips and fuel dilution.

I would go to Canadian Tire and get one of these MotoMaster OE Plus which at least some of them are made by Premium Guard.. just check the box in your store to see if it is made in some Asian country : https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/motomaster-oe-plus-moch9999-oil-filter-0177771p.0177771.html

The Kia filter is probably fine also as long as they are not ripping you off for more than the filter above at Canadian Tire.

Also, I would use Valvoline Restore Protect instead of that Amsoil because it seems to be the best cleaning oil from what others on the board say and could help with that noise or ticking.

The Motomaster filters I've seen are made by Champ. The Pro Series OE+ from PartSource are made by Premium Guard and seem to be very good.

Yes in the past I have also seen the canister Champ and/or Fram ones and I am also aware of the OE+ from PartSource.

But there are more recent ones I have seen that look PG like this BASIC level one below.

Older model on left and PG looking one on right (third photo he swapped so PG is on left) so the extended could be there now but we need a Canadian to go in there and check it out.

I am aware OP takes a cartridge so I know that is another story if MotoMaster switched over on those.

I just don't think the cost of Amsoil motor oil is justified. Gear oil or ATF maybe. Lots of high quality motor oils on the Walmart shelves.

For me that really depends on how used, in what or a cleanliness from start thing. I'm doing 5k's currently based on my use and used oil analysis. If I was more road warrior or longer commuter and was doing 10k - 15k and saving a change or 2 then it would cover that. Add the downtime for service if that is a factor. Lots of good oils on WM shelves but good for how long? Many members here have shown the issues from what was always thought good and extended performance oils used at MM and now moved to shorter OCI, different oils because of oil burning etc.

I know there are pictures with what HPL cleaned from the OTS oils. Valvoline Restore and Protect and ESP looks like doing some of the same. I've seen Amsoil ones that were very clean with longer OCI's, no clue on rings though.

Hopefully in the future I have the extra $$ and can try the longer intervals. By that time the kids might have to let me know as I'll probably be on the low miles, 1x per year plan or watching from hopefully above not below.

IMO severe service, extended drains, and problem engines can benefit from boutique oils. Other than that Wally has several great options to cover most situations.

Extended oil changes on a normal car/light truck has engine is typically not very cost effective as you need to do UOA.

In diesel engines where the oil sump is gallons not quarts it becomes cost effective.
