On my signature 2007 Kia Sedona - the 3.8L V6 takes a cartridge filter that fits in it's own housing under the engine shroud . It seems that no matter the OCI I run the oil filter (Fram Ultra) when removed has very little debris build up between the pleats and weigh the same as when they went in . Conversely , a canister oil filter (Fram Ultra) used on my other vehicles always come out saturated and are quite heavy in weight after an oil change . This leads me to believe such cartridge oil filters really are not that efficient and perhaps only catch the largest of debris particles ... Your thoughts and experiences ?

No debris is a good thing. It means the engine isn't full of sludge or wear materials. Most of the cut-open filter photos on this site don't show much of anything in the filter media, unless the engine has problems.
Because of the design, canister filters keep more oil inside--especially if there's an anti-drainback valve. That's probably why they feel heavier.

Yep, when my cartridges come out, they merely look wet, as if they were just dipped in oil.
Only one car crudded up its oil filter; a BMW with questionable service history. I got sludge chunks in the filter at every oil change for the whole time I had it. It ran well so I didn't fret it.

Cartridges use the same kind of filter media as canisters. Logically they do filter the same.
Cartridge housings merely replace the disposable can-type housings. Otherwise, no differences.
Your difference in weight might be due to trapped oil inside a canister.

If you can see "pieces" with the naked eye, you are likely having much more severe engine problems.
A ***GOOD*** oil filter should catch EVERYTHING larger than 20-25 microns! Your eye isn't physically capable of seeing most stuff in the 20-100 micron range, it's just too darn small. Most of the "stuff" in a used oil filter will not be "chunks" or "pieces", but stuff in the 20-100 micron range.
So, it should "appear" like it's catching nothing - - - though, it actually is. You just can't "see" it.

I'm thinking this may partly be because the filter has so much surface area. FWIW, I'm currently doing 5/6,000 mile OCI's and will run the Fram Ultra 9999 filter for 3 OCIs.
Good replies - I too run the Fram Ultra 999 and will try running for at least two 6K OCI's since it's rated for 15,000 miles - plus removing the oil filter under the engine shroud is a PITA .

So do you soak the brand new filter in clean oil and weigh it before installing it?

I bought my Sedona used, and for whatever reason it didn't come with the plastic cover on the engine, so oil filter removal is a snap for me!

Very true and if anybody can feel the weight of the trapped particles, get rid of that car immediately.

Very true and if anybody can feel the weight of the trapped particles, get rid of that car immediately.
