My friend owns a 08 Mazda 3 2.3. He had his first two OCI's done at the dealer for free. I did the third one six months ago. You have to remove seven bolts to remove the splash shield. I told him the dealer already loss three of the bolts. Just one more reason not to go to the dealer!

I went to Napa to pick up a filter for $3.60. Thanks March Napa filter sale. I was going to pick up some Quaker State 5W-20 for $2.19 a quart, but they don't even stock that weight, even though they show it on their website.

So I will head over to Wallyworld tomorrow to pick up a 5 quart jug. I can choose Mobil 5000, Quaker State, Supertech, or Motorcraft to keep the OCI under $15.00 Which one guys? I guess Mobil 5000 is the new king of the dino's after that website showed up.

Any of those oils will work well, even for Mazda's 7500 mile standard OCI, assuming your "customer" meets the criteria.

I'd put that splash guard back on when you're done. Most cars it does not matter but these Mazda 3's have the A/C compressor located on the bottom of the engine. When the splash guard is removed it leaves the compressor drive belt and both A/C lines exposed to the road.

MC blend is my choice when I can't get a full synth for the same money. But just four weeks ago, I got a case of NAPA full synth plus NAPA Gold filters for $39. Got my rebate back today ($10 total).

That makes 12 bottles of NAPA synthetic 5w-20 and 2 gold filters for $29. Less that $15/ per change including filter.

MC blend (5 qt jug) is $11.50 at Wal Mart; Quaker State conventional 5 qt jug is $10.

You dont need to remove the splash shield. Those bolts they use sometimes wont go back in properly. You can bend it down out of the way while you do the filter and use lots of rags to keep it clean.
