Obesity

Wanna see complete ignorance of nutrition + metabolic process? Look in people's shopping carts at the supermarket.
It's truly horrific sometimes.
You should see how the majority of people in the checkout line look at us. We have a cart with zero soda, sugary drinks, breads, chips, processed foods, but have lots of veggies, eggs, nuts, fish, etc. Most people look at us like we are some kind of alien.

Sounds like ours.

Calories are not all the same. How you metabolize various foods is different, even if the calories are the same.

I think some of the biggest challenges, and therefore, areas where progress can be made, is avoiding “empty calories” - sugar, white bread, etc. - that have caloric value but no nutritional benefit as well as avoiding processed foods, which are so awful for you, both because of a bunch of artificial ingredients that don’t provide nutritional value but do interact with your digestive system, brain, and metabolism.

Ugh. Just stay away from that stuff.

Carbs are not the enemy. Nor are fats and proteins. Some diets are better for certain people than others based on genetics and situation. There are blood tests you can take to see which type of food is better for your body and if you have allergies that are affecting your health and causing inflammation. Some people do better on fats than others and some do better on carbs than others. Proper balance and calorie restriction can go a long way towards health.
Carbs are the enemy if your trying to get into Ketosis. Whether you want to do that or not is a different story.

I was taking exception to Keto being "BS". It is probably the most medically studied diet ever - but studied for some specific purposes. Whether those purposes are useful to you is up to you, but its certainly not BS.

Also as mentioned, carbs are the easiest category to come by. You don't need to much worry about going to look for carbs - there in almost everything.

No....we do not need carbohydrates.
Yes, there is no essential carbohydrate like with fat and protein, but it is not carbohydrates unto themselves that is a problem. Insert the phase, “I got fat because I ate… “ to what you are eating. And if it makes sense, then it is probably not something you wanna be eating a lot of regardless of carb content. People aren’t getting fat because they have bananas and berries with their Greek yogurt in the morning or from having rice with their grilled chicken and veggies at dinner.

Just like motor oil. (ha-ha)

Love the carts with the soda full ring around the carts them are the best.

I believe most people are totally ignorant about what it takes to eat healthy. I know I was in my younger days. I was so ignorant and oblivious; I was floored when my doctor told me I was obese! I refused to accept it. Luckily, I've learned a lot over the years.

Worse are the vegans with their holier than thou attitude. All the while eating unhealthier than most people. All the vegans I know are morbidly obese!

Knew a guy who practiced and preached Keto - shed a few pounds - kept them off - died of cancer at 62 anyway …

That's sad, but it's reality. It's why I don't take myself to the extreme where I don't enjoy life. I still have a beer or two with a friend on the weekends, still enjoy some ribs and mac n cheese at times, I'll enjoy a scoop of ice cream with the kids once and a while, but keep it in moderation. My wife helps with that a lot. I could've lost more weight by now if I went extreme, but I'd rather make memories than count calories, and I'm still losing weight.

I understand the struggles that some may have.
I wonder if it would make a difference when shopping to skip by the prepared, frozen food, candy, cookie and dessert aisles and focus on buying bags of fruit such as apples, oranges grapes and if you have that desire for carbohydrates, a box or two of strictly whole wheat crackers.

I’m not sure if you would amount of weight loss I guess it really depends on what the person eats but fruit can really make you feel full and a lot of it is water content, granted yes it’s also sugars and carbohydrates, but definitely has to be better than the manufactured processed, food products I would think.

Throw in a gallon of organic skim milk, which surprisingly tastes more creamy than standard skim milk for one glass a day and drink a lot of water all day long.
No soda of any kind and no fruit drinks of any kind

In the dairy section, pick up some oikos pro yogurt and for a once a week treat a box of frozen Yasso yogurt bars, where ironically the chocolate flavor is the lowest calorie and fat content of the bunch

"Your frame can carry it...", is something you hear. "Let's compare frames", sounds better? (again, ha).
I am a Tall in sizing and I suppose that adds weight.

Same here. Back in food-rich Brooklyn, I'd buy super fresh food daily. That was one very good habit to get into.
The best was always just steps away.
I cry for the locals sometimes whilst traveling when I see paltry foodstuffs.
You want to talk about bread?

Keto or Ketogenic diet is not "BS" It was "invented" at Johns Hopkins decades ago as a treatment for epilepsy, especially childhood epilepsy, and has been proven scientifically to help.

It also has similar benefits to people with other diseases.

The diet book grifters have stolen it. Its still definitely worth researching if your looking into this for health reasons, specifically what food does what.

On the carb thing - we eat way, way too many carbs. Many healthy veggies have carbs - even tomatoes have some carbs. You definately don't need to worry about not getting enough.

I tried keto for about 2 months, and it made me feel lethargic. I was losing weight, but I had no energy, had brain fog a lot, and my liver enzymes had crept up in bloodwork. Intermittent fasting didn't help, just made the cravings worse. When I went back to eating carbs, I felt much better. I stopped trying to follow any diet plan and just made sure my plate had a protein, fat, and carb source. I probably eat 30-50% carbs, much of it from rice and starchy veggies. My liver enzymes are back to normal, no more brain fog, and have plenty of energy.

I do most of the cooking. This is a typical meal that I make at least once a week. Pan-seared sea bass, shrimp with old bay, seasoned rice, and roasted broccoli. I'll switch it up some, replacing the rice with cubed red potatoes, the broccoli for brussel sprouts or green beans, etc... but this is the balance of my meals.

Just to be clear, the message behind "BS" was the cult-like fad following. I understand its usefulness for certain health conditions.

That's a decent meal don't know the rest of day but that's definitely enough daily carbs in one meal for a day

If more plates looked like that we would not have an obesity problem. I see the kiddo got a corndog though😉

Millions of people do Keto for no other reason than just to be healthy i know it's a tough concept, but it's just a fact. I personally don't but millions do.

I tried keto once and hated it. I felt horrible the whole time. It’s just not for me.

I’ve never felt bad after eating leans meats, good quality fats, fruits, veggies and whole food carbs.

My body knows what it wants and it tells me.
