NTSB proposes no cell phones including hands free

Sorry but all the things you throw out there aren't done everyday by everybody like cell phone use is. It also doesn't cause the distraction that cell phones do. Like I said do the research on cell phone distraction and you will find that the brain changes concentration when you get on the cell phone. Maybe you can and you haven't had an accident, but then again maybe you don't realize how many times you've wandered out of your lane or almost missed your exit and made that sudden hard right turn to go across 3 lanes of traffic. Maybe you have caused an accident and didn't know it. All I am saying is if you would research it with an open mind instead of throwing out red herrings you might get a different perspective. Just saying.

Wow, you really hate cell phones. To suggest that I have done any of these things is ridiculous. I am a safe, responsible driver. Don't know much about you. Perhaps you are unable to cary on a conversation without crossing many lanes of traffic and causing an accident. If so, you should invest in some driving classes. Don't suppose that the rest of us are unable to handle our vehicles under similar circumstances.

Just because you don't like what I have to say does not invalidate it. I suppose most drivers don't adjust their HVAC controls or see billboards every day. They surely don't listen to the radio on a regular basis, do they? If you simply hate drivers using cell phones just say so. Are you really suggesting that someone who looks down at the satellite radio receiver in his dashboard while driving is less distracted than someone on the phone who is actually looking through the windshield? Or maybe you'll say people don't do that everyday.

Since you're so interested in research, why don't you research something more relevant for us. What percentage of serious accidents are actually caused by the distraction of a cell phone? I have yet to see any reliable, hard numbers on that. Until then, I will continue to use my phone in conjunction with a bluetooth handsfree system and have no problem with anyone else doing the same provided they are capable of controlling their vehicle. Bad drivers are bad drivers. Cell phones don't turn good drivers into bad ones.

Gee I'm sorry but I do kind of tend to like the idea of living and not being killed by a idiot on phone, thank you kindly. Like I said you might not realize what mistakes you have made either, but then I didn't really expect you to make any effort to look at it with a open mind. Since you want some research I'll provide some for you even though I will bet that you will still dismiss them and keep on believing that you are still a really great and safe driver:

I have more, but since I believe this is a waste of time I'll stop here.

It's not as much about the law as about enforcement of that law.

I would love to see strict enforcement of a no cell talk/text while driving, the first offense you lose your license for two months, the second time 1 year, the third time 3 years. The fourth time complete revocation of any driving privileges at all.

Studies have shown that folks that talk on the phone and text are MORE dangerous than drunk drivers! That is all I need to know.

I'll back you all the way, as I said earlier, I'm tired of sharing my side of the road with oncoming traffic with the driver talking on the phone.

Would work for me!

Like I said I'm sure it is a waste of time because these people that are addicted to their cell phones believe that they are the exception to the rule and try to throw out all the red herrings that they can think of even though they should be able to figure out that it isn't related. Of course if they would have ever researched it they would have known that.

Right, I don't need any research, all I need to see is that idiot drifting towards me. Gets scary on a 2 lane back country road with an Amish boy driving his brand new Pick-Up Dodge truck while texting.

Yes the Amish kids drive before they return to the church.

This thread sounds alot like gun control...

They cannot enforce current laws, so lets just take them away from everyone.

Am I Wrong?

Most places have laws against using firearms in ways that are obviously unsafe: brandishing, pointing, unsupervised children, shooting into the air, etc. That's all the NTSB is recommending, banning a use of mobile phones that's obviously unsafe.

Don't be so hard on him; it might be a useful metaphor after all.

That's the first thing that came to my mind as well.
So this is how I understand it went down:

1) An unladen tractor trailer makes an emergency stop for God knows what reason.
2) A pickup truck, driven by a man whose telephone had received some text messages prior to the accident, was unable to stop in time and crashed into the stationary tractor trailer.
3) Not one, but TWO school buses, through absolutely no fault of their own, piled into the truck and caused the slaughter of its driver.

The conclusion? Ban all telephone use while driving!

This is the kind of absolutely incomprehensible lunacy that you'd expect in a Stalin-era kangaroo court show-trial, not in the nation purporting to be the world's leader in justice and who knows what else.

What I propose is a reduction in workforce at the NTSB. Clearly, what we have here is an organization that is not working in the interest of the public.

It's the way of the world...agendas are waiting with pre-prepared "solutions", waiting for disasters to come along to justify them.

But that would keep us from having more government intervention in our lives. Aren't we all helpless little lambs who need the nanny state to protect us?

Couldn't agree more.

Like I said, You don't get it. That was a Mo. law, the NTSB wants to make it a National law.

Just like years ago only a couple of States had seat belt laws, now its a national law statewide. Just as hard to enforce but proven to save lives.

Unless you "don't get" the seat belt law either.
