Question, HONESTLY, when you first heard this video or at anytime, what did you think the sound was? What was the problem? Answer honestly.


The Maxima is running again thanks to mine and my brothers efforts. Total cost for the project was around $2500.00.
We put two motors in it, the first a 39k motor from a salvage, looked bad but we dropped in anyway, it came up with loud rod knock 20 minutes into the idle, oh well, got it replaced with a 79k motor which coincidently look like a
39k motor, humorous huh? I thought so. So far that motor is running fine.

After we got the second motor running I tore into the block to find the root of the problem, what do you know there was a piece of metal on top of cylinder #1. It was an ex-screw from the secondary butterfly inside the intake manifold. Wonderful eh? I could of probably sucked it out with a magnet but was so much damage to the piston, chamber and valves that it probably wouldn't have run right.

I'm at a loss for what to do now. It's quite humorous *sarcasm*, that Nissan can fail to put locktite on a part and charge me out the wazzou for it. That's a simple quality control issue and one of the bigger reasons that this will be my last Nissan vehicle.
I've tried to get a hold of Nissan quality control or goodwill department numerous times today without luck.

Does anyone have a number that I can call? I was on the phone with consumer affairs forever and they just gave me the run around with no hope to ever getting through to someone, they wouldn't even let me talk to a supervisor.

My first thought was a broken valve spring.

My advice is to write letters to Nissan, not make phone calls. Put everything in writing, and include copies of all relevant correspondence.

If that fails, you may consider having a lawyer write a letter. It would probably cost you $100 or more, but it may well be worth the expense.

This was from the engine that was originally in the car? I doubt Nissan will do anything about it, but that should not happen.

You're probably right. I think I'll try that. I have some attorney friends who would help me along the way as well. Nissan is notorious though for denying fault. Though I don't know what I'll get out of it.

Not really seeing as how it'll be nearly impossible to get money out of them.

In a small way that's good to know. At least we know the original owner did not lie to you as he was accused of doing by some.

Haha! Yes, that was beginning to get annoying as I trust that guy completely, he is was one of the better vehicle owners that I've met regarding maintenance on his car.

when some of the g35's (VQ35DE engine) started consuming large amounts of oil, this (screw coming off butterfly) was originally thought to be the culprit.

Interesting note: The screws on all my OEM Ford TB's are "peened" across the back so it would be impossible for them to back out. One extra step that Nissan could have taken........

That would explain why the noise changed pitch so often!
Unfortunately since you purchased the car used and without a warranty you won't get anything except maybe an apology from Nissan.

I think this happened to guy on another forum i read also. That thread mentioned there was a tsb for this and had a link for it, but it seems dead. Luckily the tsb numbers were in the link so here you go as a starting point NTB05058.

Nissan has gone down the [censored] - in the same manner as GM. Gm is finally getting their act together (possibly too little too late) But Nissan is about at the peak of quality control issues. From this, to the cat converters sucking material back into the engines, to head gasket leaks...

It's a shame, because Nissan in the past has produced some seriously awesome and reliable cars.

When my dad's Nissan Sentra headgasket blew for the second time. the 2nd one, 6000 miles outside of extended warranty. We were denied a goodwill gesture from Nissan. I wrote a letter to the Nissan VP of manufacturing for North America back in January about it. Haven't heard anything. No one in my Family will ever buy a Nissan as long as I live.

You are wasting your time with Nissan. I leased a new Q45 which had a faulty wiring harness that began to fail at 2 (yes two) miles from the dealer. They denied all issues and said it was a bad fuse. In 48 months of my lease (thank heaven it had a 48mo/60k warranty) the car was at the dealer 37 times and I drove a loaner for 6 months of my 48.

I hit 59,900 miles in month number 47 and parked it in my driveway for 4 weeks and then turned it in. At the turn in shop the guy said there were some things I would have to pay for so I threw the keys at him and walked away. Never heard from them again. What did I get for my trouble? An Infiniti golf shirt.

I honestly thought something broke loose and is bouncing around from the sound in the video. The ticking didn't have a steady beat so it probably isn't anything mechanical. Sounded like something was bouncing around from the random ticking. Was going to suggest you take the valve cover off before doing anything crazy like swapping engines. Looks like you started that thread already on your 3rd engine.
