Very true. We just discontinued $200,000 instrument controlled by PC with Windows 98. The instrument itself was nearly 20 year old and PC was upgraded in year 2000 from DOS to Win98. Could not be upgraded any more. The replacement is brand new but operated by Windows 2000.

Both workplaces run XP otherwise. Not sure what will happen next year? Maybe windows 7 with XP virtualization? They invested many millions in information systems that run on XP.

Some time ago, I read of a company that virtualized it's NT 4 servers (!) on vmWare ESX because the app would too much to upgrade to a new version, can't remember if it meant migrating to another app or just upgrade their existing app. Either way, it was far more cost effective, and flexible, to virtualize the NT servers.

With them behind a good firewall and weekly reboots, I'm sure the app is humming along to this day...

It is so crazy on the internet anymore I was thinking about running a virtual operating system on top of another operating system just for security. But if somebody has Windows 8 (or Mac OS 10.8) you can use the Guest Account for a lot of internet searches and activity. Everything gets deleted when you log out.

If anything, I think the internet is much more secure, especially web browsers, as far as malware being able to be drive by downloaded. It's the spam email and phishing sites that will get you.

I don't even know why I'm so concerned with antivirus software; I haven't had a virus , well, ever, since I started using Sandboxie.

Until you do...

I think a multi-faceted approach is the best way to ensure security of the PC; no one "anything" is going to make the machine safe or invulnerable. From habits, to choice of OS and applications, to security software--all of these play a role in how "safe" your PC remains.

I've gotten them from time to time, and the anti-malware/virus I'm using alerted me to it. It's usually been spam emails I check that look legit. but the Sandboxie virtulaization software contains them and keeps them off my computer. I've never been alerted for a virus/malware from going to a website.
