So, my well made plans fell apart today and in a rush, I had to use my mechanic's substitute of Kendall synthetic, 5w30 instead of the M1 5w20.

I bring him my OEM filters and he said last time he'd have the M1, but the owner has switched to Kendall because of reasons he wasn't sure of, but it appeared that he thinks it's better for some reason...

Anyway, I wanted to make the change as I had a road-trip planned and with Mother's Day up and coming, I succumbed.

So, I've not seen much around here about Kendall and was wondering what you guys think about this oil? It is the full-synthetic.

It's likely a grp III oil, much like Castrol Syntec, etc. Kendall is part of the Conoco-Phillips family, and in my opinion, they make very decent oils at a decent price.

They (conoco-Phillips) also make the Motorcraft line of lubricants which have proven to be very good.

Yeah, I wanted to go 5w20 this time after the Toyota TSB changing, but I guess I have to wait for next time.
The car is running very quiet and smooth, so seat of the pants thus far is good - no noise

To be perfectly honest, the noise issue is the only reason why I don't run M1 now. If M1 made my engine run as smooth and quiet as GC did, shooooot, I'd have a garage full of the stuff lol.

Back on topic, you will be prefectly fine running the Kendall synthetic. The CP branded blends perform very well, so I don't see why the full syn wouldn't give you great perfomance.

2006 Scion tC.
2.4L four
6k miles.
1st change to synthetic
Debating the OCI, thinking 4k.

Did a change/filter at 1k, 3k.

Scott

That oil is probably fine to 7K. Don't go beyond your new vehicle warranty OCI miles restrictions thou.

I put in synthetic at 3.5K in my Colorado 4X4. Used it for another 5.5K before swapping it out. Now I run it for 7K OCIs.

I know my opinion may not be popular, but i still think, even on synthetics, i would keep the OCI to 5K if i had a brand new car.

Todays oils are excellent, even the dino oils are excellent, but there is still no good alternative to removing contaminants and moisture than an oil change. Keep in mind the Camry sludge-problem, which proved to be too much for even full synthetics changed at 7500 miles.

Moisture shouldn't be an issue usless you're doing just short trip stop and go. Same with "contaminants." I'd take it as far as the severe schedule let you, at least.

Well, I must say that although I was kinda worried at first, my Scion tC seems to love this new oil!
I used the YZZF1 filter and Kendal Full-Synth 5w30, and my mileage - based on two tanks is up. I am almost getting an extra 1.5 gallon's worth of mileage so far.
Now I know that's hardly hard data, but that with the "seat of the pants" and hearing tests have me pretty satisfied thus far.
I have ordered a UOA kit from Blackstone, so I will try to get this one out for a UOA when I hit the 4k mark.
That will be the 10k mark for the tC, and the first batch of synthetic.

I highly doubt it is the oil.

5w20 is a thinner oil and going to a 5w30 will not gain you mileage.

Your piston rings are probably seated now properly an are getting good compression.

Nothing to do with the oil.

I didn't go to 5w30, I've been on it since new.
That's the only change, and it happened with the two tanks directly after the change.
Like I said, hardly scientific, but it is what's happening.

I wanted to go to 5w20 per the TSB, but couldn't yet.

Scott

Ah, but it still remains, it won't be anything related to the oil, the engine is just breaking in and the mileage will continue to increse as the rings seat completely.

While I believe that on a gradual basis, I don't think that such immediate results are not related to the oil, but he!!, I'm sure I'm wrong on that...

Scott

It just looks like they formulated the 5W-40 as a Euro-spec all-season long-life oil. The pour point is low and the viscosity index is high. The TBN is high and the AW level is SL. The HTHS is nice at 3.8. I have never personally seen this oil, nor heard of anyone that has used it. Don't use it in your 5W-20 engine of course.

Why was the TSB issued? What reasons were given for the change to 5w20? Are any reasons given that you should not continue to use 5w30?

There wasn't a lot of info as to why.
The reasons were very generic.

I will try to find the TSB when I get the time.
Thanks for the reply.
