One of the best UOAs I have is from a run with plain, yellow bottle Pennzoil 5W-30 from last year. All my other UOAs are from grpIII synthetics and it actually beat the numbers on some of those.

Synthetics advantages are more related to engine cleanliness, extreme temp protection and longer length of service. Seeing better wear numbers with a dino is not an uncommon trait.

Johnny, do you need a cyber-hug. Pennzoil is good oil and we really do understand that Slick-50 is just business to the exec's at SOPUS. Your participation in this forum is really needed to balance other postings. I think you have conducted yourself well in the barage of hollow jabs at the company you retired from. After buttering you up I have a question. Does Pennzoil allow their people to say that they are not involved with Slick-50 and have no recommendation one way or the other about the product, if that's the way they feel?

I don't believe I ever responded to this, so here goes.

Shell naturally wants their folks to sell the product, that's why they make it. However, I never sold the product, never believed in it 30 years ago, did not believe in it after Pennzoil bought the Quaker State Company, and still do not believe in it. As a matter of fact, I do not believe in adding anyones additive to my motor oil. A well made motor oil does not need some after market additive added to it to make it work. Just my opinion.

"Is it because people think its paraffinic wax based oil?"

See the "Lubrication and Technology of Oils and Additives" for explanations of base oil types.

Shell used to make fun of Slick 50 until they bought it with Pennzoil/Quaker State. Now all of a sudden it it good stuff! They must have "reformulated" it.

Ya we use to make fun of it at Pennzoil before they bought Quaker State. Funny what a $ will do. It was reformulated before Shell bought it at the old Pennzoil Research Center in The Woodlands.

Of course if you are looking for reasons to not like Pennzoil

I'm certainly not looking for reasons to hate them, in fact I am planning on switching both of my cars over to their oil within the next year! At this point it looks like my next oil change in the spring in the Corvette will be with PP, and next fall I am probably going to switch the Honda over to Pennzoil 5w30 (conventional).

I thought you had like decades worth of GC stored up.

Have you used it up already?

Nope, I still have about 30 or 40L of the green GC left, but I'll use that in my dad and mom's cars.

Well, I OCI'd my Hyundai with QS 5W20 4x4 SUV syn in the clear bottle and an OEM filter a couple of weeks ago and we were 7 above this morning (I know, I know, not very cold for some folks here, but plenty cold for here). There was not the slightest tap or knock at startup. Stuff flowed perfectly I suppose, the engine was smooth from the bump of the starter on. I like Pennzoil/QS!

I worked at a Wal-Mart for years, and among the jobs I did was working the auto counter. I'm now back at that shop, actually working in the shop. We install Pennzoil, and lots of people are happy with it, but for some people who 'think' they know stuff about oil, Pennzoil is the one brand they hate. Most of the time what I hear is that it is 'watery and waxy', and that it breaks down to nothing in an engine.

I've been using Pennzoil on and off for years (mostly on), and have had nothing but good service forom it. I've done everything from 3k drains every 3 months, to 9k mile drains every six months on a mostly highway driven car. Never had a problem or complaint.

When I get the chance, I try to inform people that Pennzoil is good stuff. Several people know I'm on BITOG, so they come to me for 'oil advice'. I always tell them that Pennzoil oil changes from a Wal-Mart are the best value out there, when you consider how high-quality the oil is for the price you pay. I've really 'shocked' a few people by saying that, and I think I've convinced a couple. I do use other oils b/c i like to 'experiment, but if I 'had' to settle on one oil, It'd probably be Pennzoil.

It's funny how I didn't get much startup clatter with Pennzoil 5w30 regular as I did even Havoline 5w30 and Mobil Clean 5000 5w30.

I have never found a bad oil in my life. However I started on Pennzoil and would buy it every single time if I wasn't a penny pincher.

If prices were the same for all dino oils I would take Pennzoil every time.

I was a GTX user for a long time, but seeing that I can get a 12 case of Formula Shell at Costco for under $20, I am a convert. I feel this oil is a great SOPUS product, along with QS amd Pennzoil. I wouldn't mind giving PP or QS Synth a try either. I know this isnt a Formula Shell discussion, but for the money, it is a SUPER SOPUS product. I think I'll hit some QS since it is on sale BOGO.

Thoughts on QS v. FS/PZ?

I just purchased 12 quarts of Pennzoil Platinum at the AAP BoGo sale, and I have high hopes for it in my Integra. I've always used Valvoline oils, but this stuff should be good! I plan on trying every type of oil in my car to see what it likes best to make that judgment, along with running an analysis. First up: Valvoline 5W30 (121k when purchased) which now has Auto-RX in it, then I will be draining it and using Valvoline 5W30 again for the rinse phase. After that, I plan on trying the Amsoil ASL 5W30 for a run or two, then Pennzoil Platinum for 2-3 runs, then Quaker State dino, then Mobil Clean 5000 Dino. the order could change, but i'll make my decisions based on what I think works best in my car, and have analysis's to back them up. I think the pennzoil platinum is the best synthetic bargain, however, and will most likely be what i'll stick with in terms of ease of purchase and price.
