I've spent quite a bit if time looking for root causes of the Nissan CVTs. On one Nissan site there was a ten page thread on this issue with many owners reporting trouble. Some gentleman mentioned he heard that the whining, and subsequent limp mode, were heat related. He said Nissan came out with an external transmission cooler as a fix. Some claimed their problems subsided after installation of the cooler. Evidently, if true, the radiator cooling circuit wasn't capable of cooling the fluid and causing over-heating which resulted in the car going into limp mode as designed. My question, if true, is why wouldn't Nissan add this cooler to all CVT vehicles to prevent this from being an issue? I don't know what the percentage of faulty CVTs is out of the total produced, but researching this issue has turned up alot of people with faulty CVTs, found on many different forums and platforms. Still can't get a concrete feeling as to whether there were any improvements or solutions for 2016 or 2017 models. Not much, if anything posted, for these years as far as I can find.
