Have been lurking here for about a month, am finally sticking my toe in the water. I have an 05 Maxima, getting ready for my first fill of synthetic. Have used M1 for years, but am impressed with some of the UOA's I see w/ Amsoil, but am a little concerned with thickening on extended OCI's, even though I rarely go beyond 5K.

My question: Might I be better off going with Amsoil Series 2000 0W-30 as opposed to ASL 5w30, or should I just stick to M1, which will soon be M1EP?

Please be gentle, it's my first post here!

Mike

I think that the Amsoil 0W30 is probably the best synthetic 30 weight oil available. But might be overkill at 5K mile oil changes. Not sure of the viscosity change over time of this oil, have only seen the results for Amsoil ASL 5W30. But even then that was with extended OCI. If you change at 5K miles, then any of these oils (Mobil 1 or Amsoil) will be an excellent choice.
Don't forget to use a top rated filter.

I wouldn't recommend using Amsoil unless you run change intervals of at least 7500 miles - that includes use in turbocharged engines. I believe this is also the longest service interval recommended by Nissan for their new engines. I'd recommend the regular 5w30/ASL if you are changing oil that frequently.

If you insist on changing oil every 5000 miles, I'd recommend a significantly cheaper synthetic like Mobil 1 or Castrol Syntec....

It depends on what expense level you are willing to bear. Now that Mobil has extended drain interval recommendations for Mobil 1, you can go longer with a filter change half-way through the OCI, and top-off the oil when changing filters. At 3000-mile OCI's almost any Dino Oil with the SM rating will do for far less $ than synthetics.

Amsoil 10w-30 is more shear stable and seems to be less prone to thickening.

Amsoil tends to thicken where excessive oxidation and/or high insolubles are a problem.

When using Amsoil, the usage of Lube Control (LC) and Fuel Power (FP) are your best defenses against any thickening.

The Lube Control helps control oxidation and the Fuel Power will reduce the carbon deposits and lower insolubles.

With a PC membership, the M1 comes out to about $4.40/quart, and the Amsoil 5w30/10w-30 both come out to about $4.75/quart shipped with a PC membership.

Thanks guys! I know I am probably swatting flies with a shotgun using 5K OCI's and such great oils, but it makes ME feel better!

M1 EP should be a very good oil, however, I'd like to see some UOA's first. I think the key to the improvement with this oil will be the additional 50% more PAO they use. Also, you have the choice of a 10W-40 M1 grade which will be very shear stable.

If your going to spend the money on S2k, I'd maybe suggest Amsoil's Series 3000. That is their most robust oil. In fact I inquired about it and they suggested that it is their best oil across the board. However, many see that it is rated for Deisel's so people shy away from it.
