New Toyota Recall

I think this is the official recall for the trimming correction. About two weeks ago in my area Toyota technicians were trained on how Toyota wants the pedals trimmed.

I can see it now:

John Edwards: "I do not have a love child. I do not have a love child. I do not have a love child. I do not have a love child. I do not have a love child."

"Yes I do."

Toyota: "It is not the DBW. It is not the DBW. It is not the DBW. It is not the DBW. It is not the DBW. It is not the DBW. "

"Yes it is."

I have the first gen Toyota DBW system BTW. Nothing bad has happened yet, knock on wood. The beauty of a manual is, the clucth pedal still 100% mechanical and disconnects the engine. (I can't believe I am saying this, I am an electrial engineer).

I don't understand how people equate quality of a vehicle with recalls.

There are vehicles out there with few if any recalls but relatively poor quality and reliability records.

--I am not a Toyota lover, none of their vehicles remotely appeal except maybe a Sienna if I go the minivan route.

My new Suzuki has DBW as did my previous two cars. In this Suzuki the ECU reads two redundant potentiometer circuits at the pedal which differ by about 1 volt at all positions. The wires to the pots are shielded of course.

The throttle motor is driven by PWM (pulse width modulation) and have a similar pair of redundant position feedback pots, a relay to remove all power, and a return spring.

There are 14 fault codes related to the DBW system, all cause a CEL and disable fuel flow.

I would expect Toyota's hardware design to be similar if not identical. Other than a firmware defect, I would be looking at mechanical sticking of the butterfly in the dirty environment of the intake tract or an issue with the gearbox between the throttle motor and butterfly. But all of those in theory should cause a CEL.

Here in America we make Jets, Submarines, Aircraft Carries and yes even cars, All made by American workers all doing good things and working properly everyday.

Somewhere in Toyota City someone decided that it would be ok to use that Gas pedal design and those materials. It doesn’t say a defect at manufacture or install was the cause.

A BIG +1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The USA makes some of the best products in the world. The Jets, Subs, and Carriers you mentioned are just a few. Maybe Toyota got to big to fast, and its payback time.

I hope for their sake, and the sake of people driving these unsafe cars that no one else gets hurt or killed. Everyone makes mistakes, even the best, its how they handle these mistakes that seperates them.

American workers and parts sourced from US and Canada have nothing to do with Toyota's cost cutting and cheapening their car line up.

Exactly. I believe the phrase "well it was built to their specs" is what's thrown out when someone tries to justify a problem with a supplier's part to Detroit.

As I've said before, while I wish no harm to anyone who has one of the affected vehicles, I lose absolutely no sleep seeing this sort of thing happen to Toyota. It's about time that the sheeple see that the emperor is buck-naked, and that Toyota is a business just like the rest of the evil car world.

That is a moot point considering that Toyota builds their cars here.

Debatable.

Ships, aircraft, heavy equipment and tools. Yes.

Electronics, passenger cars, and everyday consumer goods. No.

Toyota needs to get back to its roots. Japanese engineering. Japanese parts. Japanese assembly. Japanese quality control. Toyota is worse than GM now............worse because they were once a world class company that went down the tubes. This makes them worse than GM because GM NEVER had any class to begin with.

Where do the engineer who specified the gas pedal design and the programmer who wrote the ECU code work?

This isn't a build issue, this is an engineering issue.

With that I agree. Good or bad engineering is not limited to any particular nation. In the US we have examples of engineering excellence and engineering failures.

Ditto for other places in the world.

The the "where" the engineering happens doesn't really matter. What matters is how good is the engineering.

I see folks getting all wrapped around the axle about the WHERE something is made. As a consumer, I'm more concerned with the quality and price of the item. Since I'm the one working for the dollars I use to buy goods and services, I get to pick what criteria best suit my purchasing purposes.

The nation something is built or engineered is very low on my list when I'm choosing to buy something.

DBW scares me *because* I'm an electrical engineer! I know what silly little things can go wrong with precision electrical circuits in a dirty industrial/automotive environment. I actually worry more about things like the TBW pedal sensor and throttle servomotor (and other electro-mechanical sensors and actuators) than I do about the computers- you can encase the computers in polyurethane potting and keep them pristine. Not so when something has to sense or control a shaft position.

brian -- "this isn't a build issue, this is an engineering issue". here we go. another poster using fact and logic!
so many people use the term "build quality".unless one works in an assembly plant, then one knows little or nothing about it.like a plumber telling his dentist how to do a root canal, or me telling a bean counter how to do books.some people have been on a tour in an assembly plant, and now they know about build quality.
the fact is that most tsb's or recalls are due to engineering screwups, or a bad batch of parts from a vendor, not assembly.parts come from all over the world, so place of origin means little. from time to time, the assembly plants get bad parts, and sometimes they get to the car buyers. it happens, as it's not a perfect world.
this toyota issue, and the bad truck frames, the nissan murano first gen. CVT's, the recent posts of the chryco clock springs from years back, as a few examples. all engineering or part supplier issues. yet the sheeple blame the assemblers. it would be nice if the finger of blame was pointed in the right direction.
it makes me laugh.the same sheeple that likely bought pet rocks, and $400. cabbage patch dolls.ya 'gotta love the ignorant masses. the marketers do.for me, it's entertainment. gotta go.have a good weekend.

Toyota's Japanese engineering and assembly hasn't been any better than their U.S. operations:

Toyota Recall In Japan

Quote:
Toyota’s Crown sedan — model years 1999 through 2004 — was recalled due to an engine problem...

Another Toyota Recall In Japan

Quote:
In 2004, the driver of a Toyota Hilux Surf lost steering control when a relay rod snapped while they were driving on a highway in Kumamoto, Japan...

The Japan-only recall was poorly implemented, and the Japanese government issued the company a rare reproof when it reprimanded Toyota for deficient recall practices. According to news reports, Toyota admitted that the recall was inadequate.

What a troll. Must we go through this every time? Apparently it just doesn't get through your skull. Today's "american" cars are just as good as "foreign" cars. In fact, I think Ford is better than Honda and Toyota. And if you haven't noticed despite huge sales drops, GM still holds 20% of US cars on the road and is still top in sales if I recall properly.
