New tool thread

Picked up a Milwaukee Fuel Surge 1/4 Impact Hex driver today. The chuck on my old Milwaukee non-Fuel brushless 1/4 Driver exploded and I needed a replacement in a pinch, and this one came with a free 5aH battery, so I went with it. I don't think it hits as hard as my old one, likely on account of the hydraulic drive but that may be a good thing for reassembly, considering I mostly use it for small fasteners.

Idk for sure, I don’t follow these things close at all but I think the surge models are suppose to drive things like screws into wood faster and stuff like that. They are more popular with construction trades than with mechanics.

I could be way off thou.

From what I read, it's more sustained torque and less peak torque. So that would make sense as far as driving in big lag screws, etc. It's probably not gonna be as good at breaking bolts free with less peak torque, but like I said, might be a good thing for how I use it anyway. It definitely does feel a lot smoother than my much older conventional impact.

I'm gonna order a repair kit for my old one, but I had a job to finish and needed a replacement in a pinch.

For what I do if I was going to repair an old one I would convert it to 1/4” anvil for doing mechanic style work. I think that would be a slick setup.

Edit: it seems like my “hex” 1/4” impact almost always has a 1/4” anvil adaptor in it anyways.

Mine typically has a 3/8" adapter in it, lol. But its nice to be able to switch it out to drive Phillips or torx or even run sheet metal screws.

Whenever I've tried to use Surge for bolts, it just stalls (shuts down actually) if they don't move almost immediately. It seems to have additional safeties built in to somehow protect the hydraulics, although I can't understand why this would be necessary unless maybe the oil can overheat or something?

IME Surge is fantastic for wood screws and terrible for mechanic work. I love it for building shipping crates as it's faster and quieter.

Not sure if it counts, but got these tire depth gauges yesterday

I have the M12 version. I don't care for it on anything metal to metal unless it is sheet metal screws or self tappers. Hits too hard to keep from breaking bits. Nice in wood though. Much less noise and faster driving screws.

I like using self tappers to hold sheet metal tight while welding, so I guess I'll have a good use for it there along with my limited carpentry endeavors!

Name. Absolutely the name.

The alcohol content helps dull the pain of that chapter in my life...
After not seeing my ex wife for years she showed up complained her new husband beat on her regularly and said was sorry we divorced because I was kind [ I wasn't sorry ] I was as polite as possible but when she left it was a woo hoo moment I couldn't have been happier she was being beat on . Even today the thought puts a smile on my face. She is on her forth marriage.

Very nice. I loaded up on all 3 flex heads, one stubby and the 1/4 swivel myself. The Den of Tools has implied new models are coming next year, hence the sale.
I got the long 3/8” flex head. I’ve seen some complaints of backdrag on the Icons but I used to to change the belt tensioner on my son’s Corolla and it seemed fine to me. The extra length was nice to have for that job.

I got influenced 😭
This is the Icon wrench set that's been doing the rounds on TikTok beating the Snap On at their own test

Now, I do recognize that the big name tool brands are superior in some areas
But that gap is not relative to the price differential, at least in my use case
I don't do this for a living
$70 for a 7/10ths quality wrench set over a ~$600 set is in line with my needs
Sales on till Sunday 8/18, they have a SAE and Metric set

Mr.Subaru is crying about it, who cares 🙄

Most icon ratchets are 40% off till Sunday 8/18 too, as @cptbarkey said
